When most people say it's because of God or they thank god it's not to say he favored them or made it happen. But it's from having faith in something(someone) who they've never met but from the teachings in the Bible. Most of us won't believe someone or trust in someone without concrete evidence but that's what the beauty of faith is believing in something without ever seeing. I don't wanna go off on a tangent so I'll get back to it, that type of faith builds strength and character that can get you through the darkest, toughest times, and it is that in itself that makes someone thank God and their faith for getting them to where they are. You have to thank God during the ups and downs. You can't truly relish in the good times without getting through the rough times.

^ strength, character and getting through rough times has nothing to do with believing in fairy tales. Faith is a mental crutch for an otherwise crippled and helpless person, much like alcohol. It's no coincidence that recovering alcoholics turn to faith as a substitute.
