Galen Rupp Comes Up Short for USATF Title #9 - Then Blows Off The Media

Imagine if you interviewed Matt Ryan 5 minutes after last snap, he probably be a little testy. Galen is still sweating from the race, give him time.

Would you prefer the the answer out of anger and regret it later like Kara Goucher at the OT Marathon trials? As I recall, you ran with her negative, non-specific statements. I thought that reflectly poorly in everyone. Anyone watching sports for post- race handshake/ interview analysis needs perspective.

At least he is competitive enough to be truly pissed about missing the team. He could just be cashing marathon appearance fee checks for the next year.

Ken Goe was not at the meet. He must have called Galen Rupp last night to do an interview.

I got back on this thread because I see a new Ken Goe article saying, "In their comprehensive recap of the race, the experts at LetsRun.com said it was "bush-league behavior."

Rupp, though, told me in a phone interview after the race, he took a few minutes to compose himself and did return to the mixed zone. He said there was no one there when he went back."

Let me explain how the mixed zone works. The athletes leave the track. They go to an area where they gather there stuff. On the other side of that is an area where the media is. They have to exit by them on their way out.

Rupp finished his race and didn't get his stuff. He just exited passed the media (I wasn't even down there yet because I know it takes a few minutes for athletes to gather there stuff). He then had to go back and get his stuff and exit again. That's when I got there and saw Amanda Brooks of USATF run up to Galen after he exited the second time and say "they really want to talk to you" and he said no and left.

We then conducted all the interviews with all the rest of the runners in the race and the winnersand left and there was no sign of Galen Rupp. John says we were the last people to leave the mixed zone.

Stuff like that happens. At the Olympic Trials Ben Blankenship jumped the fence to avoid talking to the media.

Guys it's not that he's off the sauce. Or was ever in. The real factor here is he is a Dad. Less sleep, less time, more energy into parenting. I came out to say he was done after having twins and was slammed for it. There's always exceptions to the rule but he is a full time dad. That takes away from your running. That and he's getting older. 20's guys will always have the advantage in a kick.

This is actually the answer. Unlike a certain teammate of his, he doesn't leave his family and fly around the world to train (yeeezzzzzz!!!). That plus age plus marathon training all leads to having just a little bit of trouble kicking down 13 flat guys like Mead.

Rupp doesn't look like a natural marathoner to me. I think 10000m is a better event for him. Normally Rupp can kick fairly well off a hard last 2000m. But presumably he hasn't been doing the right sort of work to do that.

In the end, he's probably willing to take an olympic medal over one more USATF win.

The answer is simple. Galen never grew up. Galen is a spoiled kid who cannot handle adversity. That is why he hides after a bad performance. Kids might do the same.

Interesting when analyzing different champion's personalities. I've had the opportunity to meet a several championship runners in the past. Almost all are very humble. One thing that struck me was that I've met Meb three times (each about a year apart). He was very gracious, humble and had a kind personality. I was shocked that he remembered me the 2nd time I met him...and I AM A NOBODY. He even went out of his way to say some kind words to me, which was very motivating. I'm sure Galen is a nice guy, but he outwardly appears that it is all about himself. What a contrast.
