Good call.
People on here recommended Season 1 of The Killing. I watched it, and it was good, but it didn't really lead to a resolution--should I continue?
BTW Seattle isn't quite as endlessly rainy as the show suggests. In an average year NYC gets significantly more rain than Seattle (or Portland, OR)--though I'll admit that Seattle is very frequently overcast.
The Great British Baking show, yo. It's crazy dope.

Okay, I watched all four seasons (the last was only six shows). Season 2 of The Killing really just continued/resolved Season 1, and I'd recommend it. Season 3 went in a very different direction but I still thought it was very good.
Season 4, not so much. I guess somebody thought there was a market for "what happened to them afterward?", but S4 was just kind of bizarre--strange plot, strange writing, inconsistent characterization. Just ending at the end of S3, with some things kind of up in the air, would have been better.

That's one word, or maybe four.
I watched GLOW when it was on in the 80s and was enjoying the show until it got too political. I did like the documentary with all the old GLOW wrestlers, though.
My daughter added a limited-time HBO membership to the Netflix subscription, so I'm up to speed on GOT and also finally saw Westworld. Both very entertaining.

I haven't been a TV watcher for the last, oh, 30 years or so, so I don't have a grasp of good recent TV.
If you haven't watched TV for the last 30 years or so, go back watch 24 seasons 1 & 2 (then skip to the last season in NYC). This is the foundation of where all good TV has been revolutionized from over the past 15 years.
Because of this and other recommendations, I did indeed take a look at 24. I've gotten about 15 hours in and feel like I've got the idea (kind of a modern-day Perils of Pauline cliffhanger show)--am letting it go, for now, while I look at more time-limited stuff. Dunno whether I'm DNFing on 24 or not--maybe I'll get back to it.
I had to keep reminding myself while watching 24 (and, earlier, The West Wing) that it was written/filmed before 9/11. Obviously notions of adequate security measures have changed!
Thanks again to all for recommendations of TV shows (and movies, either on TV or in theaters). Much appreciated.
I hated 24 and gave up after season 1. Theres too many better shows out there to waste time on that show.

And speaking of stuff from the previous millennium, I just watched "The Matrix" (of which I'd only seen pieces previously). Very entertaining, but as usual it's a hoot to see how current computer tech has outpaced the "futuristic" computers that the movie projected.
Early in this thread there were a lot of recommendations for "The Wire," so that's probably the series I'll try next. Know nothing about it!
And I think I'll check "Icarus" at some point--there seemed to be mixed views about it, though.
Wow--I saw "Icarus" last night. Thoroughly entertaining and I recommend it strongly.
I have no doubt that the movie advances a particular viewpoint, but this was some strong stuff.
Aaaand today I saw "Moonrise Kingdom."
Weird, funny, great. Wes Anderson, what can I say?
I think I'll try "The Thin Blue Line" next.
Seriously, thanks again to everybody for the input.
I just saw "Metropolis"--restored version of Fritz Lang's silent masterpiece. I had seen it years (decades) ago, but the restored material (about a quarter of the film!) just made a huge difference. Truly a masterpiece.
Plus it was fun lipreading what the German actors were saying. Anyway, I strongly recommend it--one of the truly great silent films.

She won, actually. Great performance.
I'm watching the Angelina Jolie movie "First They Killed My Father"--probably the best of her movies that I've seen. It's (mostly) in Cambodian. I studied Cambodian for years, but am really glad for the subtitles--I'm missing 80-90% of the dialogue! Good show, though.
Two other options that have not been mentioned:
1) Justified - most of Deadwood cast appears at one point or another in this series. Some unevenness between seasons but overall great stuff. Think of it as a modern day western.
2) You're the Worst - A very entertaining people behaving badly series. The leads play complete jerks but really smart and entertaining complete jerks.
Someone also mentioned The Bridge - you get to pick with interpretation you like of this one - the Swedish version, the US version, and lastly the UK version (called The Tunnel). All follow basically the same plot lines but each has its own unique cultural lens.
So much good stuff out there....

Doesn't have to be--the OP later asked for any movie/TV recommendations, whether on Netflix or not.
