The issue as I see it from most peoples perspective isn't that he dropped out. It's that he dropped out and then went on to do a workout after the race. It's rather disrespectful to the entire field in that race if you pull out citing the fact you feel you were at risk of injury had you continued and then not even let the day end before getting back on the track to do some training.
I don't think it would have killed AlSal and Rupp to have called it a day there at least this once.

It's fair and natural to have some bias against your competitors, especially if they can race at your level at your distance when it's not even their specialty. I get that Nick got offended when hearing of the 10K silver medalist aiming for an indoor mile WR, which is something Nick has not achieved or perhaps feels it's not a high probability.
This is kind of Nick's way of saying, 'it's my mile race, so stay away from it.'
Why? The answer is simple.
This is Nick's way of saying, "I'm clean. It's absurd you are suddenly a 3:50 miler. Stay the hell out of my event."

Rupp did not start a 10000 in Eugene but ran another race. He stopped after falling in a diamond league 5000. He lost a shoe and won an NCAA 5000. He also fell and finished the NYC half.
Right. Rupp is in very good company.
Personally I greatly admire Rupp, Salazar, and the entire NOP. They keep raising the standards for everyone else and in quite benevolent ways. It is rare for coaches to share everything they are doing this, and Salazar does this routinely. I have great respect for him.
Rupp did the right think to drop out of the race. Perhaps his shoe was laced wrong and pinching his foot. I have stopped in the middle of runs numerous times to sit down, take my shoes off and readjust them, or to remove a rock from my shoes. A couple of times my shoes were bothering me in races, I sat down, tossed my shoes off and continued on barefoot.
Anytime someone feels a chance of an injury coming on, especially going into a sprint, should know the best thing is to stop instead of risking the end of a season, especially in such a low level race, this wasn't even a championship.
Of course if Rupp was okay he is fine doing a workout later on. I'm very interested in these post race workouts and think they are great. I never considered doing workouts after races in my serious racing days, but am doing them now and enjoy them.

Willis is proving my point that one of the #1 problems with track is 99% of the time a meet in reality is a practice. Except for worlds or USAs, fans are expected to watch practice.

Rupp said leg but seemed to me to be purposely vague. I thought he showed a much better media presence than in the past when things haven't gone his way. He initially avoided the mixed zone but came back and talked for 45 seconds but puporsely didn't get into specifics which is fine. He was very professional in handling the media.

The tweet has no effect. No one would care if a 5000 guy mocked a miler who moved up and dropped out of a race. No one will drive to see a race between Willis and Rupp due to a silly tweet. People might go see Willis if he got faster.In the end, this is a 10000 guy running a mile for practice. Every time he runs the mile it's purpose is to get better at the longer races. The point about Hill does nothing for the sport. Hill did something good. He can attract people by getting in the mix. LRC posts don't change that.

This is true, but Willis shouldn't scapegoat Rupp in highlighting this issue. Galen doesn't owe Willis or the fans anything. He could have not showed up for all I care. Rupp has bigger ambitions than this indoor meet and his DNF reflects that.
Our sport needs something to boost fan interest badly. I don't know what approach is best: cheap beer, ekiden style races, crazy prize money, sideshow man vs. beast entertainment on the infield during races? How is it that golf, an inherently less-interesting, less-televisable sport, is 1000x times more popular than T&F? Someone (not Rupp) is dropping the ball.

willis didn't care that rupp DNFed...he cared that he went on to do a post-race workout after dropping.
also...the slow pace had nothing to do with rupp dropping out. i also doubt he dropped due to feeling poor either. he started the race mid-pack, presumably to practice moving up through the field. he remained in roughly the same position throughout. rupp wasn't interested in a fast pace...so that's not why he dropped. he specifically wanted a slow pace.
i think it's fair to assume that rupp felt something weird on his foot/leg, so he dropped out. whatever, he didn't want to make it worse. he later realized it was okay, so he did a workout. personally i wouldn't have, but i'm not the elite runner.

Willis called him out and created some hype which is excellent for the competition and sport. Don't hate on anybody. Guess NOP wants some revenge now and you can enjoy the next time they race Nick Willis. Maybe they beat him AND do a post race w/o which has nice potential for a tweet as well.

I agree. It was a crappy pace and no way was the field going to run a fast time. A big waste of time. Willis is a 1500 / miler in good form. Head to head in a fast race it would be a toss up with maybe a slight edge to Rupp.
Nw won that dash 5k thing last year for nyrr. He should do more track 5ks cuz he's beast
This forum has confirmed to me that it is heavily occupied by young high schoolers. Do you honestly believe that Rupp was hurt. He showed no type of pain during the race and when he dropped. Just a grimaced face. That's a coward...He should've said that he's intimidated by the Willis and the field and raced scared. He didn't want to lose so he dropped. It's typical protocol because every runner has done it.
I will say he does have a lot of pressure and everybody watching him and expecting him to perform, BUT, he knows the business and at the elite level you better perform or you will be forgotten.
He's not a racer, he needs to be paced with an open track to run fast. ie Alan Webb
