If you want to use a miler as an example of cross country greatness then I can use the all-time two milers and 5000 meter list to judge whether a cross country runner should be considered among the best all-time.
I've never seen a track time from Mohamud but I'm assuming he must have at least broke 8:50 or 14:10 like the rest that are considered the best all time.

You are absolutely right about when the renaissance began, people always say 2000/2001 mainly focusing on Webb, Ritz and Hall's senior year, but the renaissance clearly started 2-3 years before that.
96/97 the athletes listed below started to get their names on the top-10 list, which had not changed very much in 15 years.

Is this guy such a badass that he so easily took down Hudson's indoor 5K record - Yup!(Although to be honest, it was quite soft! - the record, not Hudson!) Is this guy the defending Footlocker Champion who so easily cruised away from everyone last year and made it look like a Sunday walk in the park - Yup! Sure, he's a bit smug at times and even cocky in that Eastern European kind of way, but let's face it, he's the future and the sooner we back him, the better! But only if he runs around 14:30, then he should be on the "list" with the greats. He’s going to have to earn his place like everyone else!

You realize Chris Derrick didn't break this record? I know you think that Chris Derrick isn't near as good as the rest of these guys since he didn't win Footlocker, but Derrick has placed 7th, 3rd and 5th at the NCAA championships these past three years, which is better the first two years than Ritz did. I wish we could compare times but they were on different courses.
I'm not saying Ritz wouldn't have given the record a good run or maybe broken it, but that record is a lot tougher than it seems. He certainly wouldn't have broken it by 12 seconds.
Yeah, it isn't Holmdel, Illinois is a much better distance state than a backwater like NJ. Craig Virgin was a 2X World XC champion for a reason.

In his debut 5000m as a pro he was still very tiny but by the following January he suspiciously bulked up. I am sure what happened during that time frame will be revealed in the coming years.

No, he got taller all during college, hence the constant injuries. As far as muscles go, he did bulk up pretty quick, but his size was there, he just needed to fill out. Ritz filled out a lot once he went pro as well.
A couple things:
a) We're talking about the runners while in high school here. Ritz - as a junior - ran 14:29 (13:59 3 Mile) at Orlando at Footlocker. As a senior, Ritz ran 14:10 (13:40 3 Mile) at his state meet course. 2 weeks later, he ran 14:35 (14:05 3 Mile) at Kenosha (significantly harder than Detweiller). Lukas and Derrick both were only able to hit 14:45-14:47 at Kenosha. Why would you doubt that Ritz could have hit a 13:40 3 Mile at Detweiller?
b) Distance running has come a long way since Virgin was winning world cross championships.

What part of LUKE DOESN"T RACE ALL OUT do you not understand? Which is another reason Luke is greater than past American greats. He has learned at a very early age that distance running is never about going all out. Look at Ritz after both his Footlocker victories. He collapses to the ground like Alberto at Boston. Very different than Luke who loped across the finish line as if he was passing the 2 mile marker. Finally an american who doesn't idolize that idiot Pre who poisoned generations of American running with the stupidest strategy in the world. Ritz idolized Pre in high school. Luke idolizes Geb. Luke is not only more talented, he is more mature than Ritz.

Idiots! Skagle's intentionally committing common errors to "illicit arise" out of you (to elicit a rise out of you). Well played.
Track coach is correct that the resurgence dates back to the mid 1990s. When Franklyn Sanchez and Andy Powell ran around 8:50, and Sanchez was only 16 at the time, that right there was the beginning. Jennings and Stember carried it forward from there and the height of it all was Ritz/Hall/Webb, of course, but depth continued to build at the hs level throughout the aughts.

I of been saying it wrong my whole life and since I took it for granite all these years, I guess I'm libel to keep doing it. Looks like I've got a ways to go, expecially since I might be suffering from Old Timer's disease before too long. I guess it's a mute point now, but for all intensive purposes, my English teachers should of corrected me but they let me off Scott free. Well, it's a no-holes-barred, doggy dog world out there and finally learning this could be a blessing in the skies. Irregardless, I could care less. But that's a whole nother story.
