Galen Rupp vs. Scott Bauhs

*Disclaimer: I haven't read the thread except for the opening post, so I don't know where the conversation is at right now, but here is my opinion.

Rupp's speed is very much underrated. I am willing to bet money that he could run 3:55-low to 3:54 in a full mile.

I'll be the first to say that I am not fond of some of the circumstances surrounding Rupp, like many others. However, Rupp, despite his great Olympics race and his 10K PR, is underrated. This guy isn't just your run-of-the-mill NCAA champion, he is likely the top 10K runner and one of the top two or three three 5K runners in America (behind Lagat and maybe Teg at 5K, and he could be challenged in a 10K by Abdi and a few others who could be good were they to run the 10K--Ritz, Hall, Teg). I believe he has begun to show this through his Oly 10K, and his conference, regional, and national CC performances, and I believe he'll continue to show it over the course of the next 6 to 8 months. I fully expect 13:0X and 27-low for times, and some great performances at high-level meets in that time frame.

Gaylen needs to man up and prove it. Both of these guys are going to race and we'll see. I think Gaylen has tapped more into his running than Scott has. So in years to come well see. They both will not be great marathoners, Josh McD will be.

galen might have speed but i have seen him make many attempts at the mile always resulting in 4:01 or slower... Bauhs is already a sub 4 guy and will lower his pr this season. galen has great strength thats why he runs 4 o's not because of speed

dude rupp and baughs are practically the same age, stop takling about puperty please. plus I think baughs is older so i think he may have been running longer

Hard to compare best 5K times between these two guys, because Rupp has not raced in many fast 5K staged races. Rupp's training over the past couple of years has been primarily focused around the 10K distance for both track and XC. And, his 10K PR, which is close to back-to-back 13:45s suggests that he has the capability to run sub-13:10 over 5K. Other than a couple of more attmepts simply to improve his 5K resume, he may not run many more, as I believe he will focus over the next year or two to max out his potential over 10K on the track, establish a US National record, and attempt to be first American born under 27:00 - after this Salazar will no doubt introduce him to the roads...

My WC 10K predictions are; Bekele, Kipchoge, Rupp for Bronze!

Bauhs on anything besides a Rupp-certified course.

I 100% agree with this post, nicely done. You must be/ have been a pretty good runner or coach to understand this.

These predictions for rupp's potential seem a little high. Bauhs has been running seriously for what, 3 years? Throwing around a bunch of blue sky about rupp is fine, but given each athletes developmental history it's highly disingenuous to suggest that Bauhs potential isn't at least equal to, if not greater than rupp's.

I haven't read a single post on this thread, but Rupp would beat him over any distance after Bauhs makes another wrong turn.

listen, Gary Towne might be Gary Towne but he's no Simmons... Simmons is a big deal because he is an innovator and he has never had a d1 program and this is only his 3 semester at d2 level. if you don't know why simmons is a bigger deal than towne maybe you should read simmons book. name one other coach from an NAIA program that is talked about on the national level...

I'm not quite sure why you brought Scott Simmons into the discussion, but I will rebut your statements.

While Simmons is a good coach, he most definitely buys his championships. The dude snatches up every African runner who knows how to lace up a pair of shoes. If he can't win championships with a team like that, then he doesn't deserve to coach a grade-level team, let alone a college team.

I have it on very good knowledge that unless Simmons has the ability to bring in -- on scholarships, mind you -- enough Africans to guarantee a title, he won't take a coaching job. That is why he is at Queens and not another NAIA school. After VI cut the program, he couldn't find another NAIA school with the same athletic budget.

Simmons does not know how to develop talent, only how to train runners who are already talented.

Bauhs will triumph over Rupp because of better coaching. Coach Towne Rocks!

Did your coach here ever tell you to not race your team mates?

If he/she did or didn't does it make sense why you would not want to be competitive with your own team members?.....racing in practices, pushing workouts too hard, stress every time you got to run with your team mates...etc.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the next Olympics Bauhs and Rupp are most likely going to be teammates for team USA. Even though they may not be training together they will be on the same crew.

The conversation here seems to want to set one or the other up for failure. I know the post is "Galen Rupp vs. Scott Bauhs" and everyone is making good arguments but I think it's a poor choice for a topic and we should be talking more about "Rupp AND Bauhs working together!" That has a much better ring to it in my opinion.

There is an article that is highly recommended on this site(let's run) that talks about Rupp and his teammates friendship that helped U of O win Nat's. That's what I'm talking about.

I've recieved the baton at the same time as Bauhs at the mile leg on a distance medly and... you can just imagine. Rupp or Bauhs, I would want either of them on my team in a heartbeat.

Let's not tear our olympian hopefuls apart because it's about time we appreciate the stacked deck we(Americans) are dealt.

How many Kenyans were on his VI teams?

David Cheromei and Elkana. (on the first and third year teams. The second team won it Kenyan free.)

I'm not sure what you're saying here. He beat some guy named Baughs? Who is that? I thought we were talking about Scott BAUHS.

Bauhs has never run against the "big boys" except at the Olympic Trials, where he showed that he is way down to the waiting list to even be worthy of being called Rupp's bitch, placing 16th, 71 seconds back.
