Oops, hit reply too quick. Anyway - the above is the point. She didn't just try it, she's really digging it. As a recovering druggie myself, this is not a good sign.

While my brother Flagpole is maybe going a little too far (he is being goaded into it) he does have some valid points -- it isn't just a harmless little deal if you take to it like this.

I call BS on anyone who says that experimenting with coke and other hard drugs is just a "normal" part of young people. When I was in college, almost everyone was drinking underage, about a quarter of guys had tried pot, but NO ONE I knew was doing coke. Maybe they did a good job of covering it up, but I'd bet on my life that no more than 5% of the kids in my college ever tried it.

Coke is nothing more than a variation of Russian Roulette. If you're lucky, you won't get addicted, but if you aren't, it will f*ck up your life.

Not goaded into anything brother. Mr. Perry believes it's ok for his wife to do drugs, and even though SHE isn't a prostitute and SHE hasn't killed anyone, the stuff she snorts up her nose had a hand in it. Someone at one time died for her cocaine use, and some woman somewhere sold her body attached in some way to the cocaine that his wife used. Guaranteed. Robberies too. Children neglected. All of it. He says to me, "Another story for the war on drugs" or whatever the hell he said. He says that because he's dismissing all of it. He's got his head in the sand and doesn't want to believe that what he's doing is wrong. That's an enabler for you. Classic case of one.

- Number of people I knew who drank underage: too many to count

- Number of people I knew who tried weed: 9

- Number of people I knew who brought a knife to school: 5

- Number of people I knew who had a gun in the car they drove to school: 2

- Number of people I knew who tried coke: 0

Wear a hidden mike. Record her saying she uses the stuff. Turn the tape over to your local cops. It becomes a police matter.

No. this is NOT a great post. you think that anyone who makes a big deal about coke use is young and inexperienced???

How about 99% of addictions counselors out there. Anyone I've known who is a professional addictions counselor (and yes, I know several) is typically middle-aged and they have definetly been around the block a few times in their day. Addictions counselors are not known for being young and experienced. They are usually ex-addicts themselves who have now gone on to pursue several years of advanced education to provide professional treatment to addicts and abusers. And I can GUARANTEE you that the vast majority of addictions counselors would be making a big deal about this girls coke use. Because they know better than anyone that you can't just wait around and see if it turns into a full-blown addiction. You have to intervene early if you want to increase hope for success. That means making a big deal about hard drug use even if it's currently recreational and infrequent.

btw, to the OP:

now that we've all gone off on rants at one another for 8 pages, are you still with us? Have you talked to your gf about any of this?

As one who has been down this road I can attest to the fact that the immediate "love" of the drug is a bad sign for the young woman.

On the other side of this argument is Flagpole Willy. Whoever he is he presents his position as a religious zealot who knows very little of the reality of the situation.

I'm pretty sure that there were more, but those 9 kids were the only ones that I knew had tried weed. If you want to count all the rumors (hey, I heard that guy smokes pot), the number is over 20.

FYI, my school wasn't in Alaska, but it wasn't that big either. About 120-140 kids were in my graduating class (class of 02).

But the bottom line is that coke usage is NOT common among any age group.
