I really don't see this being much different than certain runners being able to scoop up the 2,000m, 3,000m and 2 mile records. Or the indoor 1,500m and mile records and the outdoor 1,500 and mile records. Even the 100m and 200m seem fairly redundant as do the 5,000m and 10,000m, it's been a long time since two different people held the 5k and 10k records.

Your idea would cost the sport millions and for me it was the best event to watch without any British interest. Even then I only enjoyed the 1500m. Normal people want to see drama and competition who care if it 6:30 or 6:38 - only nerds.

I agree. I saw him practicing before the WC and he was clearing 8.60m but he was using a not legal runway which was 500m!

I used to think the same thing, but it is good for the sport. If he would have just jumped 6.30 a few years ago, he may have not PR'd again for years. That keeps his name out of the press and pole vault out of the news.

It is usually the meet paying out the money for the world record. They have the ability to say they are not going to do it. But they offer that incentive so that he puts in an 'honest effort' at their meet and tries for a new world record. Knowing that someone is attempting a world record puts fans in the stands, and then they make more money as a meet director!
