New Balance 5th Avenue Mile

Thanks for taking the time to look into this. It makes sense that possibly the 5th Avenue course is shorter than other mile courses. However, the bigger question, which someone may have a definite answer to, is whether the 5th Avenue course changed between when Muir ran the record, and when Schweizer tied it, or was it the same exact course?

5th ave is point to point (straight line) and net downhill. Grand Blue mile (the one in Iowa - USATF) starts and ends at basically the same place (under 50% away) and isn't net downhill...

Now if no one here actually knows whether the course is the same (but someone likely does), then it’s easy to just assume Muir and Schweizer ran the exact same course, since the announcers always point out the record time, and they never question, or even consider the possibility of the course being changed.

You addressed your post to me, while avoiding the actual question.

The course doesn’t change, it’s always started by the Met and gone downtown to the edge of Central Park. As far as being short, my Strava did have it at 0.99 miles. It’s conceivable they messed up the start or finish line by a couple meters, but that seems pretty unlikely.

The 5th Avenue Mile has brought in multiple world class milers over the years, like Elle St. Pierre, Jenny Simpson, and Laura Muir.

Some of those world class milers were very familiar with the course, winning it multiple times, like Jenny Simpson, Maricica Puica, Alisa Hill, Regina Jacobs, Paula Radcliffe, Kim McGreevy, Carmen Douma-Hussar, Shannon Rowbury, and Jemma Reekie.

So the really big question which seems to get little attention is how in the world did a non-world class miler (a 5/10 type) come onto the course and tie the course record without ever running it before??

I just don’t get it.

Now there will always be someone, usually trying to be cute or not, that will pop off with the short retort “it was the BTC drugs”.

But really now,

(a) are the drugs that powerful, allowing a 5/10k type to lay waste to the past efforts of multiple world-class milers??

Even if the drugs are pretty game-changing,

(b) does that answer presume none of the previous world class miler winners were not using the same drugs?

There’s a lot of good thought in that post . For what it’s worth , he really genuinely looked surprised and confused as to how far sideways this year has gone. I don’t care who you are are circumstances like a perfect trip you get 3:46.x even on a super fast 200m is still outstanding.

people theorrize he was over the edge of fitness ? He really did not run that many outdoor efforts.

I actually felt bad for him the longer the interview went as he was clearly frustrated dissapointed and kind of confused.

At least he interviews and doesn’t duck it.

I have seen all but 3-4 of his races and I never remember that exaggerated breathing thing

he is always right there with 200 left , he is a 1:43.x guy, the cheeks puff out and so does his late run in.

Maybe I am over observing this now, a couple of noted others. , have noticed it as well.

Then the last like 150 especially last 50 he literally gives away 5-6 spots.

Are you referring to the Janat Chemusto that ran a 9:36 3000m in the African youth games, which is natural ability, no? She was later busted for nandrolone (not EPO).

If you think that is all she was taking, I have a bridge to sell you. Nandrolone is what they can catch. EPO much less likely. And no, she never showed WC ability. But yes, that is who I am referring to.

The latter two are only “close” because you’re including first names. Strip it down to Hocker, Hacker, and Hoare…then, only the first two of those names are similar, and with one being Olympic champ, the confusion should quickly evaporate.

Then are you sure you’re not confused on who shows ability at a young age? She ran a 9:22 3000m at the age of 15, and a 4:17.61 at age 16 (or 17). Aren’t those times faster than Tuohy’s were?

Chemusto leads gold medal hunt

Janat Chemusto who won a silver medal in the 1500m and a 3000m bronze at the Africa Youth Championship, is out to go a step better in Columbia

Wolfe is really legit. My one caveat is I think Nur is extremely slept on. He may not have a 12:4X to his name, but he’s beaten everyone you just mentioned and closed his US title in a 2:20 K. Get him a healthy year of training and I think he’s same level as Blanks/Wolfe if not better. The only two that seem to be in a league of their own to me are Nico and Grant

Understood it’s legit, but the question was whether the course had changed between Muir’s record-breaking run, and Schweizer’s record-tying, even though the answer to that question might be an obvious “NO, no way” to a New Yorker living in the city.

So if that is true, I find what Schweizer did in her debut on that course amazing and curious, and I find it rather curious that it doesn’t seem to get much attention.

Fifth Ave is fast and downhill. It’s unrabbited, so times are heavily reliant on if someone goes out honestly to nab the halfway bonus. If they do and there’s a tailwind we are talking 3-5 seconds over a track mile. There’s also no turns and running in a straight line so you’re more likely to run 1609 meters as opposed to 1620-25 in a crowded mile race. So Gracie Morris’ time is impressive but puts her in the 4:19-21 realm for me in an optimal track mile. Schweizer slightly faster last year but she’s run 4-flat for the 1500, and was running really well to close out last season.
