Bernard Lagat.... SELFISH for doubling in 3k AND 5k. Give your 5k Spot to Solinsky! 9/1/2010 4:46AM
I never, not once, thought of Bernard Lagat as a selfish athlete. He always seems gracious, incredibly fast, and seemingly a good mentor to the younger guys.
But seeing that he is going for the double this weekend, shutting out Solinsky from a Championship style meet, is, honestly, a bit mind boggling.
I lost a lot of respect for Lagat as a mentor. Even if he was chosen for both, he should have respectfully declined the 5k spot, and suggested that they chose Solinsky. The dude is like 35, had a great season, and is still going to race the 3k. Move over and don't be selfish, Bernard. Let Chris get some experience. It will not diminish your own one bit, and in fact, add to your legacy as a great sportsman and gentleman. At this stage in your career, that should matter to you.
I wish there was a way to stir the pot on this and protest somehow.
Thoughts?

I think Bernard Lagat is an incredible model athlete that all our distance runners can use to measure themselves and their careers. Since he recieved his U.S citizenship Bernard jumps at every opportunity to represent his new country.
His thought of helping the U.S bring home the maximum amount of points in the team battle at the Contential Cup was amazing. CHRIS SOLINSKY wasn't eligible to run; however, even if he was could he have duplicated Bernard victory in the 3000m? I seriously doubt it since Chris hasn't won against an international field all year in the 3000m or 5000m. Chris could've CERTAINLY placed top 5 and maybe even top 3 but for the victory we had the best American 3000m/5000m runner: BERNARD LAGAT!
U.S. distance running is back as a powerhouse. Come and support our men and women athletes as they take on all international opponents. 2011 and 2012 we will need your full support as:
5-STAR GENERAL: Bernard Lagat
2-Star General:
Shalane Flanagan, Meb Keflezighi, Dathan Ritzenhein
Lt. General:
Leo Manazo, Andrew Wheating, Shannon Rowbury, Molly Huddle, and Chris Solinsky
Colonel:
Alyssa Johnson, Ryan Hall, Nick Symmonds, Christina Wurth
Captain:
Jennifer Barringer, Dan Huling, Lopez Lomong
Lt. in training:
Alan Webb
all take the field of battle and represent our country to their best ability!
Hey "Buffalo Billy" why don't you take your sorry ass to stormfront where you belong. If Lagat is not "American" than I guess no one is.
Those eyes when he's about 20 meters from the finish line - hahaha. That would make a great Lagat T-shirt.
Do you give the U.S. Athlete of the Year to Bernard Lagat who posted one more American record than David Oliver. Lagat also won every international title available this year: World Indoor, Contential Cup 3000m and 5000m.
David Oliver
2 American records, 110H twice
World Indoor Bronze,
Contential Cup 110H GOLD
vs.
Bernard Lagat
3 American Records, 5000m indoors, outdoors 3000m, 5000m
World 3000m Indoor GOLD,
Contential Cup 3000m GOLD,
Contential Cup 5000m GOLD
After completing his double at the Contential Cup Bernard said his primary focus will be the 5000m for 2011 Worlds and 2012 Olympics. HE SAYS HE WILL BE READY FOR ANYTHING!
...
excerpts from Bernard's interview
And once again, Lagat has proven that his career is far from over.
After competing in the Fifth Avenue Mile in New York later this month, Lagat will take a break and then begin training for the World Championships next summer in Daegu and the London Olympics the following year. Lagat said his sole focus in 2011 and 2012 will be the 5000m, and preparing for any curveball his opponents might try to throw his way.
"The tactic that I still need to formulate is if the race goes fast, slow, fast, slow," Lagat said. "I probably shouldn't have said that because they'll try to do that next year, but I don't care. I'm going to train for that as well."

Why is Bernard Lagat holding onto the 1500m like it's STILL his best event? He was repeatedly thrashed* last year against the top Kenyans (*in GP meets he won 2 out 9 races).
Over the last 2 years in the 3000m/5000m he has lost once race in over NINE attempts at 3000m/5000m beating just about every big name including Kenenisa Bekele, Eliud Kipchoge, Isaac Songok, etc!
In the Pre meet last week Bernard got dusted by Daniel Komen who isn't even the best 1500m Kenyan. Augustine Choge beat 3 out of 4 meeting last year and 1 for 1 this year.
So what hope does Bernard Lagat have in the 1500m and why doesn't his coach tell him to move up to the 5000m?
Funny how the last post on this thread in 2007 was in June and the thinking was that he had no kick and was too old for the 1500.
No update here right after he won the 2007 WC Gold in the 1500 with a fantastic kick.
Lagat is actually a Kenyan.... silly americans.
It was great that Bernard Lagat shocked myself and MANY other posters by winning the 2007 World 1500m title; however, I still think even in 2007 and especially now he is a better 5000m runner. Bernard is obviously still a world class miler but he is no longer the 1500m runner he was 5-6 years ago and thus I was glad to see him finally move up to the 5000m.
So glad as Lagat is leaving the 1500m alone during Championships as he is a great role model and I would like to see him and the great 5000m corp in the 2011 Worlds and 2012 Olympics.

Kenenisa may want to focus on just the 10000m this year at the World Championships. If Bernard doesn't get injuried I don't see anyone beating him in the 5000m at 2011 Worlds.
BERNARD DEFINITELY COULD HAVE BROKEN THE 2 MILE WORLD RECORD of Kenenisa Bekele 8:04.34 if he target it instead of just the AR!
my guess is Meb or Hall are
I could easily see either of them rattling off a world class time in the coming year

You are a white/KKK ass hold. Lagat is more American then you ass white!
Bernard Lagat's performance last year at the 2010 World Championships stamped himself as the best American distance runner of all-time. When he destroyed the American Record in the 2 mile yesterday running negative spilts of 4:08.2/4:01.8 it was confirmation he is the best American ever:
