Just more proof that women's running has a long way to catch up in terms of depth and competitiveness compared to the men's. They are getting there though, slowly.
Jane Hedengren has been wanting to run for BYU since she was a little kid. No way she doesn't run at least one year in college.
Correct me if I'm off base here, but I don't think it's as common for females to serve missions as young adults.
Completely optional for females to serve missions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Men are “called” (expected) women are “invited”. Many females do decide to serve missions. I have 21yr old boy/girl twins who both recently returned from serving missions.
“The Lord asks every worthy, able young man to prepare for and serve a mission. For Latter-day Saint young men, missionary service is a priesthood responsibility (see Doctrine and Covenants 36:1, 4–7). The Lord also welcomes worthy, able young women to serve missions if they desire. For young women, a mission is a powerful, but optional, opportunity. Preparing for a mission will bless a young woman whether she decides to serve as a missionary or not.”

For those of you who are not aware, "byu123" is the latest username of "the430miler".
He is totally full of crap. He is not Mormon and he does not have 21 year old twins. He is also not a college coach nor does he own tanning salons. Pay no attention to his crazy claims. This guy is nuts.
I had a ton of August and September kids in my high school graduation class. They all turned 18 at the very beginning of the academic year. Even had a July 1st kid on my XC team that turned 19 6 weeks after graduation.
I never knew a single person that did the opposite. Nobody turned 17 their senior year.
I figured that's the way it worked all across the US, but maybe it's dependent on state/region of country.
Here in AZ the cutoff is August 31st. There are occasional exemptions made, but not common. Basically anyone born in September will be the oldest in their class.
I graduated high school at 17 and turned 18 mid Nov freshman year if college.
You were born some time during a calendar year? That fascinating.
Wow . . . Kosgei thought Hedengren was a pacer . . . 😬
“For her part, Kosgei thought Hedengren was another pacer and didn't want to pass her. Kosgei passed Halladay-Lowry and outkicked her in the final 50 meters as they became the first collegians to go under 15 minutes this spring. Kosgei's time is No. 2 all-time among collegiate women and missed Parker Valby's record by less than three-tenths of a second. Halladay-Lowry is third all-time outdoors. And Hedengren, if she were in college, would be No. 4.”

She is already 18. That would be college freshmen age for many. A great time still but we have been here before with Cain and Tuohy. It's different with girls. It seems the timing of their physical maturity is a factor.
the vast majority of high school seniors are 18 by this time of the year
Look at her in that clip after the race. She just walks away. She is certainly not flopping on the ground wasted. She looks and acts like Valby did after Valby’s collegiate races. AND YET, astro and others on this forum WENT ON AND ON AND ON saying that her appearing to not be tired, or appearing to not be breathing hard, or not flopping to the ground, etc., was a tell-tale sign that Valby must have been doping. Do you all see the double-standard?!?

Same here, we had an 8/1 cutoff and a bunch of us with Aug/Sept. birthdays turned 18 right before/as the school year started. I was late August and probably would have been the youngest in my grade in other states, which makes a bigger difference for boys. We had a couple July kids too (maybe got held back or something? Not sure how that worked.) I was pretty surprised to find out my wife, who's from a different state and must have started a year early, didn't turn 18 until halfway through her first college semester.
Could be related, but our state also allowed middle schoolers to compete on varsity, and a ton of middle school girls (age 13-14) would always do really well. As others noted, I'm not sure being 18 makes a huge difference for Hedengren. And she's certainly not too old for high school.

Except that astro already accused Jane of using drugs in a different thread this morning. Look through the various threads about the race on the front page.
