Increasing the severity of the deterrent does nothing to prevent this. Some idiot kid (including 18-25) doing something like this isn't thinking "oh it's only 30 years in prison, if it was the death penalty I wouldn't do it", there's no impulse control there at all. If you want to reduce crime of all sorts, you need to catch perpetrators more often. A huge percentage of murders are never solved, and an even higher percentage of non-fatal murder attempts are never solved.
That's gonna require more resources for more cops, more community outreach to increase trust in the cops, and more automated cameras.
I agree with you that guys like this are not sitting around doing cost benefit analysis of their actions, but that is not the point. Evil people need to be punished because it is what they deserve. Not because it makes them better, not because it makes us better, or not even because it makes society better. (although I am doubtful of the last one being true)
Evil people suffering is a great thing. Righteous men should rejoice at their suffering and demand more. That is why this killer needs to be fried. So that he can spend his last moments on earth in fear and agony. That alone is reason enough. I would gladly send more money from my paycheck to the government to increase the suffering of guys like him.

In any event, Karmelo with a "k" went to high school in Frisco, TX at a school that was a cross town rival of the victim's high school. Frisco is solidly middle class. Both schools have a very low title 1/at risk population. Karmelo played football and ran track. Being on a football team in a Texas suburb means that you have a really good life in high school. So, this kid was not a product of the streets and probably had a very bright future and may have had a chance at playing in college.
He wasn't on the football team his senior year. He barely played as a junior. He's going nowhere athletically.
No discipline or consequences brings us to this place. This is how it ends.
How did this permissiveness, this fear of hurting people's feelings, fear of making them feel bad about being bad so we just DON'T, how did this help these kids or their families? Especially the victim, thats who I'm really concerned about.
I don’t think things are out of hand. We just have more people. People have always been violent, very violent, look throughout history. Problem is we only had about 2 billion people on earth up until 1920 or so, I think. Now we have 8 billion. Therefore, it’s simple, math, more people, more crazy people, per capita.
That's not it.
It's children being raised with no morality. No responsibility to do what's right.
No impulse control.
No consequences.
Bad behavior being coddled, explained away, and justified by do gooders, as if they "can't help it".
It's not about race. It's about poverty. White people in poor communities commit violent crime at about the same rate as black people in poor communities, in our society there is an overrepresentarion of black and Hispanics who are in poverty compared to whites, that's why there is more percentage of crime in those groups.
We should be trying to help people get out of cyclical/generational poverty. Look back at recent history to see why there are more blacks and Hispanics in poverty than whites. It's lazy thinking to say it's about race.
Another interesting statistic is about mass shootings. Now, let's ask ourselves, why is there an overrepresntation of white males who commit mass shootings and school shootings compared to any other racial group? Something is going on there.

I saw a study a while back that looked at rates of violence (fights) among HS and college aged men. The study looked at two groups. Men who lived in the north and men who lived in the south. What they found is that men who lived in the north talked a lot of talk and were far more likely to make verbal threats. But men in the south were far more likely to actually start a fight. The reason behind the difference was that men in the south had a sense of "honor" that obligated them to fight when they felt that their honor was challenged. Men in the north did not have the same feeling about honor and did not think it was worth fighting over.

Stay away from them. I consciously made decision to stay away from people who commit almost all crimes in NYC. It's always them. They have nothing to offer me. Otherwise, you're gambling with your life.
