Storm is back to cat 5 strength with 165 mph winds and pressure dropping to 918 mb. But the good news is that the models are now pushing the path to the south of Tampa Bay. If the track moves a bit more to the south, that could take the 10-15 ft surge out of Tampa Bay. The difference between 10-15 and 5-10 ft storm surge is having a house that needs new flooring and drywall and a house that is ripped clean off its foundation.
Its been 103 years since Tampa was struck by a major hurricane. The 1921 storm killed a few and did 10 million in damage (175 million in today dollars) but Milton will likely do far worse. Before that, 1848 was the last major hurricane to hit tampa.
St Pete's Beach has been decimated by 2 storms since August and Milton is supposed to be the worst. They're talking about turning off all the power and water before the storm.
They're still trying to recover from the last two.
Yet, they will continue to elect the people who deny climate change. Unbelievable.
Milton is now a strong cat 4 with sustained winds at 150 mph (cat 5 is 157+). Like Helene, Milton went from a tropical storm to a major hurricane in just 36 hours.
Milton may weaken a bit before making landfall as dry air from a cool front may get pulled into the storm. But still, it would be a strong cat 3 and storm surge will be at least 8-12 feet and winds will still be 120 mph or better in the best case scenario. Helene already scraped the beaches and dunes, which will mean that storm surge will just roll over the barrier island and have a greater impact inland. And the surge will also be more destructive because there are still piles of Helene debris all over that have not been picked up yet. So, it will be a storm surge full of Helene debris.
The nightmare scenario is a storm that holds together as a cat 4 and goes right up Tampa Bay. There are oil refineries and oil and gas terminals that could be heavily damaged by a 12 ft + storm surge. The big danger is that the surge rips one of the big oil storage tanks off its moorings and drags it across other storage tanks and refinery equipment causing a massive release of gasses or liquids into the air or water (or both).
Between all the man eating sinkholes, alligators, snakes, swamps, and mosquitoes in Florida, I don't see why anyone would want to live in Florida. You can't even eat a picnic in a park with a water fountain without getting eaten yourself by an alligator hiding in the water.
You're right. Don't move here and tell everyone you know not to move here

So many “theys” in one post.
We don't deny climate change, we take it for granted and do not regard it as a sufficient rationale for $3 trilllion dollars of subsidies for dismantling our power grid and replacing it with religious vanities such as windmill totem poles and druidical sun henges that waste scarce land, produce zero net power, and render us more vulnerable to sabotage and storm damage.

How funny. Your "govenor" has outlawed even the words "climate change from any official documents.
You taken it for graanted that youre all going to die in 20 foot swells? That doesnt sound like a very good idea. Why is the idea of proven alternative sources of energy so scary as opposed to, say, dying 150 mph winds?

What exactly do you climatetards want anymore? The US has reduced carbon emissions every year since 2007. Mostly due to natural gas and now due to solar and wind in middle America. Did you think hurricanes would magically disappear if Florida had a Democrat governor? Or is it Ron Desantis's fault that India and China burn lots of coal?

Thanks for bringing this rogue thread filled with strictly partisan political weirdo obsessionists back on topic.
Anyone following the news know what chance of it going back down to Cat4 before landfall will be? I have extended family out there and unable to get ahold of them.
