I said he hasn't improved his best 5k time in 3 years but said nothing about his championship performances where he showed he can win in slower tactical races. However there is nothing he has done that suggests he will run over 13 seconds faster than he has ever done and take the record.
Do you think Jakob could run 12:47?
I don't care if he can run 12:47, the claim here is that he can beat 12:35. That is in a different universe. He has shown no signs of inhabiting that universe over this distance - or he would have at some time in the last 3 years.

No you are right. If we look past medals (medals doesn't make records) there is nothing suggesting that he has made progress on the distance. I can't think of anything, and least of all three thousand things that might indicate him being faster at 5000.
Three thousand? If there are that many then why isn't he any faster than he was over 3 years ago.
But he is faster. I know, your small brain will have a meltdown now.

I’ll take that as a “yes”.

You take as a "yes" what you want. It isn't what I said. 12:47 or 12:46 - whatever. The question isn't whether he can run faster than 12:48 but can he beat 12:35. Nothing he has so far done suggests he can.

He hasn't run any faster. The question isn't whether he can run faster than 12:48 but can he beat 12:35. Which of your three thousand reasons says he can? And why hasn't he run faster than 12:48 in 3 years with "three thousand reasons" that say he can?

Unlike fantasists like you, I don't think that "thinking" he will run faster will make him any faster. Fans have been thinking that for 3 years but it hasn't made him any faster.

My three thousand reasons? You are confusing me with someone else. That's what happens when you argue with everybody.
Unlike fantasists like you, I don't think that "thinking" he will run faster will make him any faster. Fans have been thinking that for 3 years but it hasn't made him any faster.
So you don't think a guy who massively improved his 3000m best time and destroyed the previous world record could be a threat to run 12:35?

So are you settling for the possibility he may run faster than 12:48 or are you suggesting he will beat 12:35, which is what is being claimed here? No one cares whether he might run 12:40 something - it isn't the wr or anywhere near it.

As I pointed out previously, the 3k is only a little over half the distance of 5k. It doesn't extrapolate, that excelling over the shorter distance will mean he will do the same over the longer. Ingebrigtsen is clearly exceptional over 2k-3k but hasn't shown anything like that pace over longer distances. I could see him getting close to 12:40 in a record attempt but 12:35 is a long way from his pr. The record is held by the 10k record holder. Clearly, that kind of endurance is necessary for the 5k record. Ingebrigtsen hasn't yet shown he has that.

I just asked two simple questions. It seems you don’t reject the idea that Jakob could run 12:47 or 12:46.
Do you—in your esteemed opinion—think Jakob could run 12:45?

How do you know he isn't faster? Don't you think his 3k WR indicates that he indeed is faster in the 5k than he was 3 years ago?

Good post! -I think there’s no bigger Jakob fan out there than me, but here I side with you: There’s no indications of Jakob going sub 12.40.
So what have we got: 4 x 5000m wins against good competition? Sure, but in none of these races were the top dogs in peak shape (Cheptegei injured, Gebrhiwet covid, Fisher leggy after a fast 10000m, a lot of athletes suffering in the warm weather or missing their peak) -medal winners without sub 13 pbs. So in my view we only have Jakob’s 12.48 -he won and could maybe have done 12.45. And sure: probably improved another 5 sec the last three years…
A fast 3000m doesn’t extrapolate to a fast 5000m if the former is your sweet spot. And it doesn’t necessarily give you the WR in the 1500m either. With a sweet spot in the 3k one rapidly loses seconds in both ends, and a 12.40 5k would easily mean a half minute loss in the 10 k and a couple of minutes in the half marathon…. But we don’t know.
Jakob himself thinking he is better the longer the distance doesn’t mean a thing -he has clearly admitted that he even doesn’t know what he can do in his main event based on recent training. And training high mileage does not mean long distance talent / capability….
Indications of a fading distance profile: He thinks the 5000m is hard and painful, and he had to give a gap after 3000m in his 12.48. And his 27.54 roads was slow, as his 63.13 / 27.27 of course also, and his Euro xc wins (when in good base shape) translate to no better than 27 flat in my opinion. And we also got his 8k xc collapse in 2019 as a sign….
Jakob could be much better than these superficially indications are saying. But I would preferred that he had kept his big mouth shut here, and let every distance above 3k come as a big positive surprise if he excelled… But still everything very exciting in the years to come!

I don't think he can beat 12:35. I am not interested in whether he can run faster than what he achieved three years ago if he isn't able to beat the wr. I see no indication that he will.

One of your few posts I would agree with. And you are always a gentleman.

As I have repeatedly said, the issue isn't whether he can now run faster than 12:48 but whether he can beat 12:35.
No need to repeatedly say the same things. Out of the previous 138 posts, 47 were from you. That's more than one third. And invariably you argue, you insult, you repeat yourself. And all because of your obsession, Jakob. Funny.

I repeatedly say the same thing - as you put it - because I am repeatedly asked the same questions. Since this is a Jakob thread then all who post here must be similarly obsessed. Your obsession of course is not with the subject of the thread but my posts.
