No HM in Laros IAAF profile. You lying, or have a link? And you are right, Jacob probably going for WR, but what about Jakob?
Laros ran the 5k, and I guess the HM time was mixed up with Swedish 800 m guy...
Andreas Almgren continued his ascent through the distances with a brilliantly fast half marathon debut in the Barcelona Half Marathon on Sunday (11) morning. The former 800m specialist finished second behind Kenya’s former world record-holder Kibiwott Kandie in a Swedish record of 59:23 to move to second on the European all-time list behind Julien Wanders’ continental record of 59:13. "Maybe I didn't think that I would lower the [Swedish] record by almost two minutes, but I felt that I am in very good shape, so I wanted to go under 60 minutes. I started even a little faster and felt strong, so I thought I'll continue and we'll see how it goes," said Almgren as quoted by Svensk Friidrott.
It's a bold move, but it makes sense to test oneself and capitalize on opportunities at the end of the season. Balancing performance with earning potential can be a smart strategy, especially in high-stakes events.
Is that why he pissed his pants and didn't race the Olympic 5000?
It is actually an IQ test. IF you think Jakob can currently finish within 30 seconds of the world record in the half marathon, you CANNOT have a high IQ.
But it's certainly higher than yours.
Consider how Yomif ran a 57:41 last October.
Jakob has repeatedly beat him at 3k and 5k in the past two years.
I'm not predicting Jakob would go faster on Sunday, but your confident take is way misplaced

Wow. Just wow. Jakob beats EVERYBODY at 3000m and 5000m. So I guess that means he can beat them at the half marathon? Or be as good as them? This is the thinking of a simpleton. Next you will tell me that Arop would destroy Jakob at 1500m because he can beat him at 800m every time. You don’t understand this sort of thing.
It certainly gives me some pause knowing that Kejelcha and Barega have both run 57-high. Jakob does smash them every time over 5k but Jakob is also a massive unknown over 10k. Kejelcha, Barega, and Kiplimo all of excellent 10k times and the HM is a lot closer in it's physical demands to the 10k than any other distance. Jakob says he trains like a half-marathoner, and I have no reason to not believe him but there is still a bit of a question mark over him for any distance above 5k. I still think he goes for the European record, which is very attainable for someone of his talent - realistically, Farah should have put that into the 58 range, as it is, it's quite a soft record (59:13) in the age of supershoes. And that would still be an awesome achievement for Jakob. To end the year with a 3:26 1500, the 3k WR, Olympic gold in the 5k, and a European record in the HM would be astonishing for any other runner - in fact, it would be a whole career's worth of achievements for most athletes and Jakob has done it in a single year.

Right, and Yomif is a fast miler with incredible range. Jakob is faster at the mile and 3000 and repeatedly beating Yomif at 5000.
Obviously, from that point you need to speculate, but I give Jakob some benefit of the doubt based on his XC history and his style of training and fact he's even said that the half is a good distance for him.
Thus, I judge it's not unreasonable to assume he could, if pushed and if he really wanted to attempt it, at a minimum, come within 20 seconds of Yomif in the half--and thereby be within 30 seconds of the world record.
I fear it is you who don't understand this sort of thing, friend.

I agree 100%. If I'm lining up against another runner in a HM, I'd much rather be the faster 3k/5k guy than not. Jakob is more talented than him.

Yomif probably weighs about 30 lbs less than Jakob. They are not the same athlete. Jakob is completely unproven at the half marathon. Who cares if he likes the distance? He probably has potential to be good at the distance. But he is not going to be running anywhere close to the world record at this time.

Yeah you have no clue either. So you expect Jakob to be a better marathoner than Kelvin Kiptum was. But this is ridiculous.
Jakob's a great XC runner too. Sub-58:00 at worst if he runs.
The problem is he has to do it 2 days after a 1500m final he cares a lot about. If he can run sub-58, he's automatically the GROAT (greatest range of all-time). For reference, Mo ran 3:28 and 59:23 2 months apart. I have no trouble believing Jakob would break 60-mins next week, and wouldn't be shocked to see him run 58-mins but sub-58 is pushing it.
Among men, maybe, but it's going to take a lot more than that to beat Hassan in terms of greatest range ever. From an elite 800m runner to Olympic gold medalist and second fastest marathoner ever.
