Absolutely massive if true.
Is the WR going down?
Here is what Jakob had to say when directly asked if he'd be running the half on Sunday: https://www.letsrun.com/news/2...

Half marathon or half-mile?
Half marathon
I have heard the same information.
Probably the half 5k marathon
If this is true, my money is on a controlled effort (read: tempo) of 60 min flat to 61. However, it sure would be neat if he said YOLO and ran it flat out!
I'll be very impressed if he runs sub 59. Around 60 flat is probably pretty likely. The year Cheptegei ran the 5,000m and 10,000m world records he got rolled up at the world half marathon championships. Jakob's 1500m/5000m training is quite a bit different from half marathon training, even with all of his threshold running.
huge if true. will take huge balls to battle kiplimo first time out. would think he would want to test himself in an easy one first. he is really not afraid to lose if he takes this on.
Nahh if he runs it he'll surely go for the win (which probably will require sub 58), and maybe a world record. He hates to lose and would never compete if he does not think he can win. Also, HM-pace is probably the pace he runs the most in training.
I doubt he's not going to be able to run sub 59. A less talented runner like Andreas Almgren talked to the Ingebrigtsen brothers and adopted their base training, and he ran 59:23 in his half marathon debut.
The world record in his debut would be crazy though, but who knows, if anyone is going to do it it's him.
I don't believe he'd take the race on just to run a 60 or 61. he can run a 61 by himself on the streets of sandnes. a very fast half is possible on 5000 training, though probably not maximum. a half is MUCH MUCH closer to a 5000 than a marathon. both distance wise and physiologically
Playing devil's advocate here. There is nobody who spends more time than Jakob running at "HM pace" throughout all his threshold training. And he can still run 3:26.73 and 7:17.55. I'd say he still has the advantage and he himself stated that the HM is probably his best distance. I do, however, agree with you about Chep. If a 26:11 guy couldn't do it, but who knows really. We don't even know if he's even running it.
Two days after the Brussels 1500? That's crazy if true, but let's not get our WR expectations up yet.
That was my first though as well. Even then, 59 low does seem reasonable.
I cannot imagine why 4:23's would be difficult for this guy at all for 57 minutes.
He did sort of the same thing last year when he ran the 3000m the day after the mile in the diamond league finals. It's the end of the season - why not test yourself in the HM and at the same time earn a big load of cash?

Yeah I immediately thought of the mile/3000. I have no doubt that Jakob can run a very fast half marathon any day of the week, but I don't think whatever he might do on Sunday is indicative of his true potential given it's at the end of a season where his primary focus is the 1500.
It takes a day to recover for every mile you race, so anyone should theoretically literally be able to run any race the day after a 1500m. I actually found myself more sharp when I ran sessions the day after a 1500m when I did track. So he can be sharp, but I'm afraid sharp for Jakob is not the same as sharp for Bekele. I suspect Jakob may be capable of 59:30 at most, but fanboys are deluding themselves if they think there will be a WR.
The fact that we all can discuss WR’s when a rumor like this comes around and discuss them with a fair amount of seriousness only speaks to the level of Jakob’s talent. What an exciting time to be a fan of track & field.
Maybe he is running it with his brother that does half marathons.
