Our race preview is now up and we've been told that the pacing lights will be set for 3:30. We will try to confirm that at the pre-race press conference which has been delayed as Jakob's flight was delayed.
What is the point of pace lights if they aren't set for an impressive time? Can anyone explain why a 3:30 race where the field has multiple guys who have just run 3:26-7 is improved by pace lights? I'm open to ideas
I take it back. Can't be a wr every time. They want lights, fine. Look forward to watching the race. Maybe rojos paced/unpaced alternatively plan will happen someday. Also would be cool if they did a ”Bannister mile" with same type of shoes and track. Tracksmith and Red Bull, do it up. After watching Mondo v. Warholm, I want to more hypotheticals. Sydney vs. Shacarri should happen.
I don't know I'd go as far to say "pace lights can be ignored".
1) The lights will be set to what the pacers are asked to run
I don't think that's the case.
When is the last Jakob race where the pacers ran only 3:30 pace?
Well buddy there is apparently a "first for everything" isn't there. 1.52 is the confirmed pace which as I pointed out is by the math "3:30 pace" but of course isn't really 3:30 pace - it's suggesting a high 2.47/low 2.48 time at 1200m which is of course going to result in a 3.28 winning time.

Everyone relax, stop and think about this. For the million'th time - yes they have asked for 1.52.0 at 800m which mathematically translates to 3.30 at 1500m - but considering these guys are all running mid to high 53's for the last lap (3.23.5-24 pace), we are going to end up with a time much faster than 3.30. I mean after 1.52.0 there is nothing stopping the field running 55.0 for the 3rd lap if they are good enough and then a fast race is really on.
In Monaco, Peter Sisk the second pacer hit 800m in 1.51.0 and Jakob ran sub 3.27. So why couldn't we hit 800m tonight in 1.52.0 and still run a time under 3.28? Either way I honestly find this pace an okay compromise given it's a "final" situation - blasting the doors off the field with a 1.50.0 opening 800m seems kind of stupid. Nobody is in that shape at this point of the season anyway, this will set up a great race.
All the bums in this thread thinking that pace lights automatically dictate the race. So many men in the field with absurd talent levels can take it out however they feel is going to win them the race- I wouldn't want to be Ingy on the last lap of a 3:30 if Hocker's still on my heels.
It seems like all the distance events besides the women's steeple have relatively unambitious paces listed:
M Steeple: 8:10
M 5,000: 13:00
W 1,500: 3:54 (2:36 though 1k is listed)
W 5,000: 14:30
W Steeple: 8:45 (5:50 through 2k is listed)
Conclusion: These are smaller fields (10-11 racers) than DL ones with 15-20 racers, so there's really no need to force them to separate early and then have a less exciting or crowded finish. Instead they can go out reasonably, and have more compelling racing with more strategy and suspense.
I'd still expect pretty decent times as often the ambitious paces backfire and it slows heavily after the rabbits drop. Here the rabbits should actually hit the prescribed paces and someone is probably going to feel good and keep it going.
So while a 3:26, 3:50 or sub 8:00 steeple is highly unlikely, a series of more competitive sub-3:29, sub-3:53 and sub-8:05 races is possible.

Time for a "new name".
I'm not your buddy.
WE will see. I suspect the pacers will be faster than 3:30 pace.

You're right about one thing - you aren't.
I'm kind of confused what precedent you are basing this opinion. I haven't seen a single DL 1500m race this year where the pacers haven't run the asked for pace - you do realize that the pace is ultimately agreed on and set by the key athletes in the race right? The lights will be buzzing around at what we have been told - why would the guys that want this pace then what, secretly conspire with the pacers to basically not utilize the point of them and run faster? That makes zero sense at all.
And of course the pacers will be faster than 1.52.0 at 800m (3:30 pace) - they will probably be about 3-4 meters ahead of that in 1.51.7ish - it's Jakob that wants to hit 800m in 1.52.0 which is why the green light is set to this number. Just thought we should clear this up before you come back post race and proclaim that the pacers went faster when all they did was their job.

You attack me for saying the pacers will be faster than the 3:30 pace then say "And of course the pacers will be faster than 1.52.0 at 800m (3:30 pace) - they will probably be about 3-4 meters ahead of that in 1.51.7ish "

God help us
And, of course, 4 meters ahead of 1:52 in a 1500m would put the pacers would put them at more like 1:51.4 or 1:51.5, not 1:51.7.
