re partying, meh. you're pretending kids that age have never partied before. and you're forgetting this is a kid. when i was 17 and 18 my select team would go to this flyaway international tournament, one game a day, and stay at this particular hotel there. we'd wake up about noon, eat a meal, play an afternoon game, eat dinner out and sightsee, the parents would keep us out of mischief by handing us some cases of beer, we'd watch movies in the hotel, pound 4-6 beers a night, hit a nearby diner after midnight, wake up zero hangover midday next day, go play another. and we did fine. lost 2 games in 2 years there, won the 3rd place game one year, quarters the other. a couple guys got some on the trips but i kind of don't buy a 16 year old kid with a bunch of 20 and 30 year olds is actually in prime position. and dude's talented but he's not a physical specimen.
deal is we could party and play because we had a set schedule, game monday @___, game tuesday _____, etc. it only became less predictable in the knockouts when you'd find out your next game after your last one.
i think it's more likely he had poor communication of his role and when to prepare for it, and judging by 47, was either off his training........or sick. i think if they don't tell you if it's mixed or men's then you're like backing off for mixed, but then not racing, then backing off for men's, then finally racing, and maybe just didn't train enough. 47 to me feels like a "first meet" type time for someone in HS who runs 44-45 peak.
