Katelyn Tuohy reacts to finishing 7th in a new NCAA outdoor 5000m record 15:03.12 at the On Running Track Fest at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, Calif. Her f...
factchek, T&FN, USTFCCCA, and anyone who does not have a specifically pro-Tuohy agenda agree: Jenny ran faster. It does not count as an indoor record because the track was longer than 200m. However, the 200m requirement does not apply to overall records. This should be obvious since many (not all, as indoor times still count toward overall records just like outdoor marks do) were set on 400m tracks. If this 400m-track performance applies to overall NCAA, but not indoor NCAA records, so does Jenny's 300m-track mark.
Many of you want to disparage factchek and the few other posters who are pointing this out (I think the 3rd poster in the thread was one), perhaps because you believe he is really saying that this performance is mediocre. That's not what he's saying, nor am I. The point that has been made, with links to record lists, is that it is not an NCAA record. It is certainly is a good performance and personal best.
Now, if you count out-of-season times for NCAA record purposes, it's not even close. As pointed out in the thread, there doesn't seem to be an 'Official NCAA' list (feel free to link it), so it's left to you whether you count times by currently enrolled students with elegibility left who run times outside of the official NCAA season. The entire NCAA record picture - not just W5000 - changes then.
So, most of us agree that it is a step forward for KT....but no list exists which puts this mark on top other than her PB list. It's a personal record and no record otherwise. Feel free to post lists which contradict this.
Well it is hard to match that type of natural, god given talent. :)
I would agree that Gidey has a lot of god-given talent. 14:06? Gidey could have run her victory lap, showered and left the stadium before KT crossed the finish line.

This is the official outdoor list from USTFCCCA. Tuohy's time will appear on this list to replace Simpson's 15:07 .
Obviously Simpson ran a faster time for all season /all conditions and was imho the GOAT of college running. Lisa Koll was faster than Jenny at 14:55, and Jessica Hull ran 15 flat. Does not change what the outdoor record is. Why is this concept hard to grasp
do you go to college football message boards and constantly post that NFL teams are better?
Awesome analogy.
Henry Rono was able to compete against pros as a collegian. So too Matt Boling. John McEnroe as well. You think Wilt at Kansas or Kareem at UCLA couldn't have competed against pros as collegians?
Your so-called official site says right above Jenny’s name that the list is “UNOFFICIAL”.
You really need to be making your point with the Ncaa, NY times, NC state, runner space etc who have already communicated this unofficial information to millions of fans, rather than to 10 old guys on a 1st generation website.
Similarly, had you gotten the info out when KT was a soph to ESPN, so and Gatorade that others had run faster than her 4:33, you could have prevented her from winning the Gatorade award.
Tuohy’s done. She obviously wanted to go sub 15 and had nothing. Gave all these excuses post race. Must be in denial. Sad her career is already starting to end
😂😂 imagine running 15:03 despite having bad weeks of training going into it due to school work
id be scared once she graduates and actually focuses on running only
Stop with the hyperbole. She's great and broke another record. You make it sound like going to school like everyone else in history eligible for that record or flying across the US and running an evening race are these insurmountable odds that only she had to experience and somehow persevered. I hope you are simply a smitten college or high school kid, because if not, it's a bit weird.
