If it were a championship race, I think they both might have been DQ'd, as Hiltz forced herself into a very narrow space and probably made contact from behind, but Rose also drifted over to the inside after leaving it open and didn't keep her line. Since it wasn't a championship meet, and is really about getting qualifications standards, and because Hiltz and Rose were really in separate fields, I don't see the point in DQing someone, especially when they break 2 by falling across the line. Hiltz wouldn't affect collegiate scoring or rankings. So I think they made the right call. But if it was in the US Championships, I think both should've been DQ'd.

Everyone knows what the commentator meant. You are welcome to hold your political view, but you can't possibly be that dumb to actually have been confused when an individual person passing someone was reffered to as "they" when you can see what is happening with your own eyes.

Do you complain when someone uses the word "you" to refer to a single person. Did you know that "you" is actually originally plural. "They" has been used in written English in the singular form since 1300. Since then both they and you have been used in both singular and plural forms.

Pretty much every well respected dictionary (e.g. Oxford and Merium Webster) has always supported the use of singular they. As far as I am aware there is only one mainstream source that claims it to be an error (Chicago manuel of style, which is just a style guide, not a dictionary). Of course there is the random high school teacher who mistakenly complained about the use of singular they in their students essays. But those teachers were actually being ungrammatical. Even back then it was a stylistic complaint, not a grammar rule.

This is the disingenuous, psychopathic logic that's angering people. The default has never been to ask a person what their identity is; that's a norm that a tiny fraction of the population is trying to impose upon others through emotional manipulation and threats of social ostracism. You know damn well that the vast, VAST majority of people on the planet can be correctly placed in a sex category based on a single glance and that that is how people have magically known what pronouns to use right up until about 2017.

I'm not sure about the DQ. It's a shady move, for sure.

They bumped into Rose, then they won the race, the crowd love the race, they really did. They will race again and maybe next time they will win again, but they might not.

The rule is that you're supposed to maintain your line down the homestraight. For most of the straight, Rose was in the outer part of the lane. In the last stages, she swung back in and "shut the door" some on Hiltz. Probably inadvertent on Rose's part, but you don't get to do that. If a DQ were to be called, it would/should more likely be on Rose.

Rose stayed in lane 1 on the final 100m. She 'swung back in' by about 40cm at a point where nobody was within 2 stride lengths of her. Hiltz was maybe gambling that Rose would drift out again by that 40cm, but Hiltz lost that bet and then went anyway.

The rule which is never enforced is rule 163 on page 66

"Each competitor shall run in a direct line after entering the final straightaway...."

I have a hard time DQing Rose if she did not change her lane.

I understand your point and agree that the rule is rarely enforced. Fact remains, it *is* the rule, and Rose broke it.

While in general I don't adhere to the no-harm, no-foul philosophy, I actually agree with the no-foul call in this particular race. Rose's violation of the rule was probably unintentional--tired runners wobble--and did not keep Hiltz from finishing first.

Once Hiltz actually enters real adult life, gets a job, has a kid, and travels outside of the US, she’ll realize the lunacy of her pronoun selfishness.

I guess the question is how "direct" is direct? Some might say staying in 1 lane is direct. I agree with enforcing all rules as written, and also making sure they are written with little rule for "interpretation". So to enforce this rule we must better define "direct".

oh and the other question is the pass on the inside cause Rose to lose the race? Not that there is a great prize here, but if this was the Olympics?
