Now the great irony here is that the ethnic group that would be most impacted by a tax to pay for reparations is Asian Americans (Asian Americans earn about 23% more per capita than whites in California). So, you would have one ethnic group that faced similar levels of discrimination historically in California paying out reparations to another ethnic group in a state that never allowed slavery.
The biggest con progressives have pulled, and they’ve pulled quite a lot of them, is to convince a critical mass of American society that people who were not alive when their ancestors were harmed, have a right to claim recompense for those harms. To do that they had to convince a critical mass of American society that the proper unit to consider these things is based on identity, rather than individual people: The quote in the OP from the guy who claims “WE worked for free” makes absolutely no sense unless you have previously decided you believe that gains and harms by any member of a specific identity group should get attributed to the total pool of that identity group’s gains our harms throughout history. It’s an absurd way of thinking, it’s more in line with eastern thought with its interest in honor and shame upon the family and so forth.
But I’m not just being a hater, I don’t think: in a capitalist society, you just try to get what you can get and if you happen to be in a demographic they’re going to hand a six-figure check to, I’m not gonna fault anyone for taking the money. The politicians who have been brainwashed into thinking that the payout makes sense are to blame, not the people who take it, though I think I know how this is going to end for most of the recipients. You often read about how somebody wins much more money than this, amounts in the millions and millions, in the lottery, and then they blow it all within a few years and are back to where they started . Hopefully some of the recipients of this major windfall will save and invest so that it can grow into some thing, but I suspect the great majority of them will blow it. It’s just human nature.
And when that happens, you can expect progressive thought leaders to find a way to blame white supremacy for everyone blowing their reparations money, and we can expect them to insist that actually, the debt hasn’t been paid yet after all, and we need another round of checks, and another round of DEI legislation, and so forth. This sort of thing will never ever end, because it’s not in the progressives interest to let it end.
And I suppose the next thought, if we’ve accepted the rectitude of reparations to black people, is to start taking private land from white people, and giving it to the Indian tribes, on exactly the same principle of thought as is being used here. I don’t expect California to resist doing these backward-looking, handwringing, regressive actions, but hopefully the rest of the nation will be more sensible.
As my final thought on all this, I’m looking forward to all the TikToks posted by black users who are unable to prove they descend from 19th century Americans and get denied their checks. The rants and raves are probably going to be pretty entertaining.
Payouts/handouts are the epitome of foolishness. One of the human characteristics is to strive, in the moral, ethical, spiritual or pragmatic domains of life. Being handed freebies robs a person of these essential and fundamental aspirational attributes.
This is a bizarre stunt. Nothing will come of it. Why do the smart people in SF elect such fools?

1) if it has no chance of passing, then why try? To get ppl’s hopes sky high, rip the carpet out from under their feet, and then blame it all on “M*GA republicans” (aka white people)? That could honestly be the straw that broke the camel’s back to ignite a race war. You can’t dangle financial relief of that magnitude in front of someone’s face and then rip it away. It would be devastating.
2) If it did somehow pass, it would create a logistical clusterf*ck the likes we have never seen - Who gets what? How can you prove it? Who pays for it? How are you gonna deal with the mass migration of ppl to CA to “get theirs?”
If they give $350,000 to a bunch of poor people, most are going to blow it on cars, a new wardrobe, and going to the clubs. They'll blow through every penny within 2 years or less. How often do you hear about pro football or basketball players who came from "the hood" who sign huge multimillion dollar contracts and are filing for bankruptcy within ten years of retiring? Ever see the ESPN 30 for 30 called "Broke"? There are going to be a lot of repossessed "tricked out" cars available in California.
Unlikely that such a law will be written in a way that will satisfy the current Supreme Court (a good thing). That the report comes from FOX seems significant.
