North Rockland HS of New York sophomore Katelyn Tuohy breaks the national high school record in the girls' mile at the 2018 New Balance Nationals on June 17t...
what's with the hate (or even just criticism) of Tuohy? Can't we just appreciate what the girl has accomplished? Do you guys even understand how it would feel if she were to go on these boards and see what is being said about her? I hope for her sake that she has the right sense of mind to not waste her time with such things. Still, what's wrong with encouraging results and appreciating the excitement a talent like her brings to the sport and just leaving it at that??? Why do we have to put limits on her rand scrutinize every little thing she does (or doesn't quite yet)?
Nico is slower now than in the spring. He clearly is going the wrong way. Probably will not be breaking 14 by the end of senior year.
Sounds stupid right? About as stupid as predicting Tuohy future performance off this race. I expect both of them are pretty happy to be in near PR time and getting a qualification time out of the way.
The improvement comparison talk is stupid because they are asking katelyn to drop the same seconds as mediocre hs runners. If that is even possible then shed be top 10 or top 5 fastest woman in the world at 5000m because im pretty sure her 15:37 is the world record for 15 year old girls.
Progression is impossible to predict. Maybe she gets stuck around around 15:00 for life. Maybe she runs 14:50 this year and 14:35 the year after. Maybe she pauses for 3 years and then pulls a Cranny and drops 30+s in 2 years. If you look at the people who make it to the top
But the idea of making predictions off 1 race is stupid...
What would she read exactly? There are millions of comments being written right now about which teams people are predicting to win or lose the NCAA Football Playoff. Now if you are talking about Valby, posters accused her of doping. Nothing close has ever been written about Tuohy. Everyone likes Tuohy.
the comments within this thread and many other similar comments that "predict" she will burnout, never achieve xx:xx time, her form is supposedly breaking down, etc. It is very demoralizing. And I am not talking about football, so there was no relevance to that.
I am not talking about Valby. I did not mention her at all. But if you want to bring Valby into it I would say the same about her. Both women are phenomenal runners with great upside that I hope to see in the future and don't deserve the criticism and skepticism and really just flat out hate they receive on these message boards. That is my point. As fans of the sport I think we should be admiring and applauding their accomplishments instead of holding them to subjective performance standards in the future (like this forum-- what is the point of it??? Nothing positive or beneficial comes from saying "oh runner X will never be able to run XX:XX)
I looked briefly and found that in the history of the world I could only find 3 women who have run a faster 5k indoors than Katelyn Tuohy and accomplished that feat at a younger age. These are Meseret Defar, Tirunesh Dibaba and Yasemin Can. Please check me on this, perhaps there are more.
This is not all that informative because 5000m indoor is run so rarely (and was run even less in earlier times) and nowadays the indoor tracks are as fast as outdoor, so one should better compare outdoor marks or all marks, regardless of in/outdoor.
Current Tuohy is very good but not outlier good as she herself was at 15-16 (or e.g. Budd at 18 (8:28/14:48), Klosterhalfen at 20 (3:59/8:29/14:51) and several Africans were).
I think some fans got carried away with dubious speculations from XC but the naysayers are also exaggerating because there just isn't enough data for predictions.
Tuohy goes for the win and that should always be her focus. Chasing times could get her injured and losses. The championship race was a fast race but that happened because the women ran an honest race. They weren't chasing time trials. After they crossed the finish line they saw the clock and realized how fast they finished which is where thoughts about time should be at the end of a race. But keep the race honest and focus on succeeding over your competitors first. Tuohy did what she had to do in the race.
If cook or valby or anyone else did what she did the last 3 seasons fans of them would be going crazy! They would be going on and on...
Theyre already doing that and those runners aren't close to her! She was best at indoor champs and then only lost 1 race, after doubling, outdoors! Then undefeated without even a close race this fall!
She has the wins and best times that's what matters! Until someone does better STFU!!!
34 MILLION 🤯 is the amount of people that interacted with the videos from katelyn tuohy fans channel in the last 365 days.
I hope Ray Flynn asked for a really big $$$ for KT's NIL deal with adidas because this number is just from a fan account and its crazy high, imagine what her stats are on her instagram with almost 100k followers.
We will see. I said the same some months back regarding her 1500 time. Tuohy ran 15:14 solo in outdoor and recently 15:15 indoor despite being worn down and needing some well earned rest. We will see what happens after a break. Her XC performance was extremely impressive, and she has always been as strong on the track as in crosscountry. And when we talk about outliers, it is again worth remembering that it in international competition you can never tell what is real. Budd for example ran during the legal blood doping era that runners like Viren partook in and the sport today is what it is. Makes comparisons and predictions very murky.
