I was at bugtown this year, and although I agree with your premise that rocky didn’t improve exactly in the way that was presented, but it was pretty clear that bugtown was a joke to rocky this year. The pack Came through the mile (with sainsbury and Heemeyer mind you) at a little over 5:10. At a little before the halfway point, Heemeyer and sainsbury made a huge move and dropped everyone, breaking it wide open.

keeping in mind that it was a jog fest for the first half, I don’t think that the bugtown times should really be compared to last year, because last year was a time trial type race up front while this year was the opposite

Bugtown wasn’t a joke to Rocky, they just utilized it as a chance to run a fast last mile of an XC race. They chilled as a group until the 2 mile mark and that had fun trying to run really hard to the finish line. They’ll continue to be solid in the region, excited to see the NW’s depth next year!

Third spot at NXR NW could be attained by many teams- which include:
Jesuit OR, Rocky Mountain ID, Boise ID, Bozeman MT, Seattle Prep WA, and Issaquah WA
To get an at-large, the third place team will need to beat an autoqualifier, and preferably a region winner, before NXR.
Some of those teams might need to schedule some races against the projected regional auto qualifiers, even if those races are out of state.
I still think it was an odd decision to not let Rocky Mountain race at NXR.
I know Granada beat autoqualifier Great Oak, but so did Rocky Mountain. I think Rocky Mountain would have done much better at NXN than Granada did.
There was a little too much California bias in those at-large picks.

Trabuco Hills overrated? I think “overly deep” would be a better term for it.

4:27, 4:28, 4:36, 4:41.
If they find a really good #5 and close the 4-5 gap during cross, they might be able to be competitive with CDA and go to NXN.
If Rocky beats CDA during regular season and gets third at NXR behind CDA / Crater, that should be good enough to make a case that they should get an at-large at NXN

They did beat Great Oak (who did in fact have the whole varsity lineup) at Bob Firman, and Granada got the at-large over them.

And during the regular season they beat Great Oak (at Bob Firman) earlier than Granada did (at Woodbridge).

And yet, Granada got an at-large over Rocky Mountain

I think Rocky Mountain will be hungrier to make it to NXN next season than they were last season since next season they are looking to be very senior heavy. Maybe 5 seniors on varsity unlike last year when they had only 3.

We may actually see a scenario where Rocky Mountain beats CDA and gets second at NXR in 2023 (with Crater winning), but CDA automatically qualifies for NXN in 2024 (because they will only have 2 seniors in 2023, and Rocky Mountain and Crater will have A LOT of seniors in 2023).

Nathan Neil is a junior not a senior. This is also his first year of XC. Used to play soccer. I think he will podium too.

Watch out for Sage Wilde too. I was surprised he didn’t qualify for NXN. So many other Midwest guys like Connell Alford, Cameron Todd, and Seth Norder are very good. Many others too.
Heartland was very strong on the individuals side this year. Some to watch next year are Sam Scott, Manny Putz, Aloysius Franzen, Bode Erickson, Clay Shively, Micah Blomker, Robert Mechura, Jack Witte, and Natnael Kifle. Franzen and Erickson are part of a team that will make it. So are Will Weber and Daniel McCollor.

9. Ryan Pajak. 12th at ChampSports nationals. Not sure if he will do NXR next year.
10. Connell Alford. 14th at ChampSports. Missed NXN by one spot, which should motivate him for this year
I would add William Steadman to this list. He is from Herriman. He didn’t run at NXN but he ran a 4:18 1600 this weekend.
He was only 5 seconds behind Simmons, 4 behind Horne, and less than 1 behind Jenkins.
He could challenge for a podium spot too.

Also gotta watch out for Clay Shively. He ran a 4:06 mile. He could be the new #1 guy at Heartland next year.
