Yeah, I really like this idea of running fast times right after XC. Everyone's really fit from XC so they have a shot to get a qualifier early, but there's no pressure if they don't because they were supposed to have already peaked, so they get some rest and can tackle it in a month or two. It also gives fans a chance to see what shape people are in. Tuohy on tired legs still managed to run 1 second off her PR. Natalie Cook ran a 1 second PR.
She clearly recovered enough to run 15:15 (which is very fast) but you will still have a fatigue factor after that type of effort. She had to run down a very fast runner who was 12 seconds ahead of her, and a sub 15:10 on a 200m track is a very big effort in its own right..
A "little disappointed" ? Some dummies here thought Tuohy was going to break 15 minutes. They are very disappointed.
People make all kinds of dumb predictions on this site.....
Yes. Some of the predictions here are way out in left field.
Irene Riggs will win by 30 seconds. Tuohy sub 15, Valby 14:40. McLaughlin and Mu should break the 400 and 800 world records any day now. Can't wait to hear what wacky prediction is next.
Old school was to take the break right after xc, so shut it down at Thanksgiving. Then these fast times started to happen at bu. As more started to do this, the schools that didn't run bu found they often missed qualifying for NCAA indoor, as half the field already came from the bu meet.
So now everyone comes to bu, and the strategy is to prolong the xc peak thru bu, and now shut it down. That's why I don't buy the tired legs argument, as coaches are trying to keep everyone fresh for this meet.
In the end there will again be a ton of indoor qualifiers from today. Tuohy, Bush and Chmiel are all safely in. Most likely Seymour too; her result today was way better than the last 3 xc meets.
15:15 is a great time. She gave an interviewed. She said her goal was sub 15 but that the last two weeks were draining and she was starting to feel run down and just did not have it today. That is why I don't make predictions. The XC nationals clearly showed what her potential is and a low 15s right now is not far off. I think it lines up with what we saw and her outdoor PRs. But the assumption that she would just maintain her peak form after just winning the national title and the crazy whirlwind that involved without suffering any fatigue was unrealistic. Now she has her qualifying time and takes a well earned break.
