Yeah, I think we need to distinguish between ‘quantity’ and ‘rate’ because people here seem to be challenged by that. Rates in this sense are ratios with time in the denominator or the unit of 100,000 people typically
This reminds me of the case in MN where a lot of people suspect a husband murdered his wife, put her in the trunk of her car, and then left it in a bad part of town with the keys in it hoping it would get stolen. 6 pages on this mainly debating crime and poor areas in Memphis when that likely has nothing to do with it. Getting killed by a spouse seems to occur just as much if not more in the middle class.
People sincerely putting forward the idea of running with a gun is utterly absurd.
God damn your country is f*cked.
I live in the US, and agree with you completely. The whole "If everyone was armed we'd have utopia" crowd are just out of their f***ing minds.
I've lived in the USA for 59 of my 60 years, and never encountered that argument, not even once, until you adduced it. I only carry pepper spray. I have lived in Manhattan for over six years now and have never had to use it but there have been two or three hairy occasions when I felt for it in my pocket just to be ready to deploy it if necessary. But I don't begrudge sane, non-felons from carrying a gun .
I find it odd that you find it odd. Both my wife and I are usually out of the house by 6:30-7. Depending who is dropping the kids off and what is going on that particular morning, it is certainly possible that she wouldn’t know I wasn’t where I was supposed to be until 730-8…
That really doesn't make much sense. Unless you have some reason to believe that the family of the missing woman and her husband had a similar schedule to your own, your own schedule is simply not relevant.
The point being made was that it is unsurprising that the husband would report her missing after "only" three hours. Certainly that should not be surprising unless you have some reason to believe that the husband would not normally be aware of whether or not his wife had returned. So, do you have such specific knowledge of this particular situation?

Why the hell would I know their schedule? My comment to the other poster was about her finding it odd… I presented a plausibility argument from my own experience in support.
It’s entirely possible that the husband didn’t know that she wasn’t where she was supposed to be until 7:30. Maybe she didn’t show up at work and her work called him as an emergency contact. Maybe he left for work before she was due to return from her run? Dude has a CrossFit shirt on in one of the pics. Does he hit the gym in the am? They both exercise in the morning and the nanny gets the kids to school?
I just think it’s stupid to pathologize completely normal things like when he reported her missing. People are obsessing over how he’s reacting. He’s crying/not crying and molding that to fit whatever preconceived and pet narrative they have.
But this is horrible and I don't think that is common in Memphis at all. People get shot all the time but usually that is gang related and mostly (not always) in certain areas.
You'd be surprised at how many have been reported missing in the IKEA in Memphis let alone the rest of the city. It's a large trafficking city.
What I have learned in this thread is that journalists don't know the difference between being a member of a family that owns a company with a revenue of $3 billion annually (n.b. revenue and profit are different words with different meanings) and being a billionaire in one's own right.
Other people are incredulous that someone born to a presumed wealthy family wants to have a proper job and a normal life.
if you take away Chicago, Baltimore, St Louis, and Philadelphia you take away 30% of homicides.
Now look at nice suburbs / peaceful rural areas with factors in common. Vermont has 7 homicides per year (1 electoral vote), Hawaii has 42 (2 electoral votes), Wyoming has 12 (1 electoral vote), Maine has 20 (2 votes).
Those places put together have what, a few million people at most, you innumerate moron. 🙄
Memphis has more violent crimes than any other American city.
Not even close.
You think I would post something without it being true? Everything is fact-based. Memphis IS the most violent city or the second most violent city.
"The top 10 most dangerous cities in the US are Little Rock, Memphis, Tacoma, Detroit, Pueblo, Cleveland, Springfield, Lansing, Kansas City and Chattanooga."

I assume you were trying to say that it had the most violent crimes per capita which is an entirely different statistic than what you originally stated.

The chart you link to clearly shows that Memphis doesn't have the most violent crimes.
What do you mean? It has 4.55 violent crimes per 1000 people. That is the most on the chart.
You originally said it had the most violent crimes, not the most violent crimes per 1000. That's what I was responding to. You really don't understand the difference?
Actually, it has the second most violent crimes behind Houston.
No, it has the second most violent crimes on that chart which is sorted by violent crimes per 1000. The lowest total of violent crimes on that list is Billings Montana with 213. You think NYC and Chicago have less than Billings Montana?
Memphis has the most per 1000 people. Yet it is not close to the most overall.
