It was borderline but not enough to DQ Athing Mu. I hope Athing Mu did her Herschel Walker 500 sit-ups and 250 bent knee leg raises this morning. Keely Hodgkinson is not playing around.

Mu did really nothing besides move a marginal amount (3 inches?) as she turned for home. Watch the video from 7:35 on, and you can see Keely has a completely unimpeded stretch run the entire straightaway. She just got outrun narrowly. Had Keely had to move out running precious extra distance, she would've lost by 2-3 strides instead of a half-stride. If you want to see an actual borderline move, this was clever from Lagat and you can see Kipchoge have to adjust his stride and slow down to avoid running into him. You see none of that from Hodgkinson who said after the race she had room to get by.
Paul Chelimo, 2016 Olympic 5000m silver medalist, tactically wins the event at U.S. Trials in 13:26.82 over 10K qualifiers Grant Fisher (13:27.01) and Woody ...
Mu almost lost it by insisting on running in the outside of lane 1. The lanes are wide enough to pass on the inside and Keely took advantage. She simply did not have enough left in her legs in the final 50m.
That's not how it looked to me at all. Mu made the mistake of running wide in lane 1 as she hit 100m to go, just as Keely looked to be about to try and go wide round her. At this point Keely sees a gap opening on the inside so starts to go through that gap. As she is about to draw alongside with the American, Mu then decides she want to be on the inside of lane 1 and cuts off Keely, forcing her to check her stride. Hodgkinson was too well mannered to try and give herself room by using her elbow to let Mu know that this was her space now. That gave Mu the half metre advantage which stayed til the finish. That was the difference between them.
Mu may not have intentially meant to do it, but Keely was definitely impeded and was restricted for most of the home straight. There should have at least been an appeal.
What on earth are you talking about? Mu led the entire last lap. She is absolutely entitled to her position in lane one.
No, Mu chose to drift out into outer lane 1. She should have kept a straight line going down the home straight, but she decided that she wanted to move back in again and enter a space that Keely was now in, thus putting her off her stride.
If you are in lane 1, and someone tries to come up - in to lane 1, it's your "established" position, i.e. lane, so Mu could've cut her off all she wanted - in lane 1
815.4m* Athing is just so far ahead of the field in fitness that she still doesn't get outran by Keely despite running an extra ~10m
Nowhere near 15m or 10m. If you run an entire bend on the line with lane 2 then you run an extra 2.89m. At no point does she run any bend this wide. She is slightly wide of the middle of lane 1 on 2nd bend (a generous 1.5m), slightly wider on the 3rd (2.5m max) and only on the 2nd half of the last bend does she drift towards outer lane (c. 2m).
That's a total of 6 m. That isn't bad for an 800m. Iv'e seen athletes run 12m - 15m wide.
Thanks for the post, I didn't know there was a lot of interest in the Mu/Hodg matchup. There was some level of in interest in the U.S. as well but not as much because we didn't view it as a race among equals; the assumption was Mu would win. Kelly is an amazing athlete, but with Athing; she is always going to be chasing a moving target. Athing's performances have been slightly down recently because she is dealing with something I will not mention since she chooses not to discuss. Under normal circumstances, Athing would likely be running 1:54x right now and winning by wider margins this year. You probably noticed she did not even run the 4x4 and if she had it her way, she would be done for the year. In terms of Kelly doping, no serious person believes this young athlete is dirty...there are some wacky people on this message board who say things just to get attention. They would accuse the Queen of doping if she ran fast times. Btw, why isn't Kelly on your 4x4, any athlete capable of running a 1:55x 800, most likely can run a relay split of 50x?
The final of the 4x4 was the same day as the 800. These two aren't college athletes, they are pros who need to be at the top of their game to win so they aren't doubling back on the same day as an individual final.
Hodgkinson isn't that quick over one lap, she runs 52 for the open 400. The UK has enough 400m women who are as good or better than that.
I have to say, I am dubious that 1:54 is possible for a clean XX woman. I guess there's Jelimo but I don't see Mu as being at her level of natural talent. Could be wrong, she's still very young but I think she'll top out at 1:55. I also don't think she'll stick with the 800. I expect her to move to the 400 in the medium term as she's already accomplished all she needs to at the 800
I forgot the schedule didn't make the 4x4 it feasible.
With all due respect to the British 400m runners, but I am almost certain Kelly could make your 4x4 if she chooses to do it. I would be very surprised if a female 1:55x 800m runners could not give you a 50x relay leg. Early this year I watched Kelly run a 52.4 at an indoor meet where she ran the 800 about 2 hours earlier.
Athing is only .05 away from 1:154x; what makes you think someone who ran 1:55.04 as a junior will never run any faster?
There was never enough space for Keely to pass Athing on the inside without there being some touching. She made her bed.
Exactly. Going for a pass on the inside is inherently risky and KH never actually completed it. She had the opportunity to get a step ahead and gain full control of the inside lane, but she didn't have the wheels. Why would Mu be obligated to move over and make room for someone who was behind her?

Keely said she wasn't impeded. Is that not enough for you to stop finding excuses?
I've watched a lot of Mu's 800 races over the last two years, and I consider her the smartest runner from a strategic point of view. Frankly, almost every step of every race has been perfect, or very close to it.
She could have slammed the door on on KH before she got on her shoulder and it would have been legit. HOWEVER, she chose not to get back on the rail - why risk getting clipped/tripped? She could have stayed locked on the rail all the way around like GF, but chose not to - why risk tripping on the rail or getting boxed when you're the fastest in the field.
The same people who are giving GF crap for staying on the rail are also giving Mu crap for not.
From 1980's to 00's, I had relatives or good friends in M.L.B./N.B.A./N.F.L./N.H.L. All said the same thing: If you are not improving, you are getting worse. Athing Mu doesn't need homer love, she needs motivation to get better. If Athing Mu does not get better, Athing Mu will watch Keely Hodgkinson earn Olympic and W.C. 800m gold medals.

they cut at 08:07 because if they kept showing that angle it would show Mu going left to obstruct the brit
