It's not debatable at all. The literal definition of an Olympian is someone who competed in the Olympic Games. He 100% did not compete in the Olympic Games because he withdrew from his only Olympic event.

A literal example of a debate is what’s going on here now.

However, I agree with you. He isn’t an Olympian because he didn’t compete.

I was just trying to explain to the guy saying he is an Olympian that it’s a debatable topic to give some consideration to his argument.

Is the backup goalkeeper for the gold medal winning soccer team an Olympian? He/She probably didn't play a minute but got a gold medal. I don't know where I stand on the debate to be honest but it doesn't seem so cut and dry.

If you don’t compete you aren’t an Olympian.

It’s like in track, members of the relay pool don’t get a medal. But even if you run only in the heats, you get a medal if the team wins one.

The key is you must compete to be eligible.

He was selected by the US Olympic Committee as an Olympic Athlete in the 1500m. The US Olympic Committee or IOC never replaced/withdrew him. He kept his spot as one of three Olympic Athletes from the US in the 1500. Participation does not impact that. Those are facts.

That's all true, but not relevant to the fact that he withdrew and did not compete in the Olympics. This means he is not an Olympian. It will sink in for you at some point ;)

Nuguse DOES think he's an Olympian and so does US Olympic Committee.

Well even you can comprehend then, that he did not need to compete to obtain Olympian status, as he got it BEFORE Olympic Games.

Also, if you paid attention, you would have noticed, that teamusa.org updated Nuguses page with a DNS, but kept his Olympian status intact.

You chose an interesting label. To be a loser, one had to have lost. The thousands of letsrun posters who merely read this thread but did not post can therefore not be losers when it comes to this topic. The label of competitor is similar in that it means someone competed. The label of Olympian can't be placed upon someone who did not compete in the Olympics. The website chose to do it when they thought he was going to compete. Had he withdrawn early enough to replace him, the 1st line woukd be the same but the 2nd line would say withdrawn. Your logic would leave him as an Olympiab even though the US would have had 3 guys on the start line.

The Olympic Committee gave Nuguse Olympian status, then updated his "Team USA" page with a DNS after the Olympics, but still kept his Olympian status. They could have deleted his Olympian status. They could have deleted Nuguse from the roster. But no, it's all there. If US Olympic Committee thinks Nuguse is an Olympian, then he is and your opinion doesn't matter a zilch.

Also, once again: one can be a competitor, but then to choose not to compete. Because you become an Olympic competitor long before the actual competition begins and stay one long after the competition's over. It's a process and not a stamp in a passport.

Playing chess with pigeons is frustrating. The challenging bit is, that people with very limited thinking capability think they're right and / or smart and there is no other way to see things.

Then Engels would have been an Olympian and I'm not so sure that Nuguse would have stayed on the Olympic roster page.

A bonus question: do "reserve runners" that relay teams bring to Olympics count as Olympians, even if they did not get to run?

The US does not bring relay pool members who do not compete.

The US submits a relay pool while at championships, of athletes at the championships. If they take them, they are running, even if it’s just a heat.

He didn't participate in any event in the Olympics. By definition you must compete in the Olympics to be an Olympian.
