USA DQ in mixed 4x4

- Official crossing the course and crashing a BMX rider in practice.

- Pulling the Dutch time trial rider off her bike when she was practicing on the course. (Not clear if it was an actual crash or not... reports have been vague.)

Arguably, these mistakes could have affected podium finishes in all these events.

Good ideas. Something along the lines of what you say would be good in the spirit of fairness to all involved - athletes and officials.

This does not top the incompetence of the Chinese women at 2019 Worlds... but this makes my top 10 of relay bungles.

Plot twist - team is reinstated. World-class track athlete doesn't think it strange to line up 30' away from everyone else... doubt just any team would have gotten that outcome.

It's very unlikely that Irby just decided to start from outside the exchange zone all by herself. More likely that an official told her to go there.

In road racing, it's not unusual to be directed off course by an official. You're expected to know the route and rules. Either you backtrack to the point you left the course with the clock running or you're DQ'd. No ifs or buts.

Directed or not, it was obvious to anyone, not just someone at a world class level.

Somebody called in a few favors... or the Waaaahmbulance.

Eh. In road racing, you have all day to re-think a mistake or go back and catch up to the field. You can't compare your crappy snooze fests to high level sprinting.

I disagree with this. It is more like the hitter running to third base instead of first base and then complaining that the umpire pointed that way.

Other thoughts:

When the officials ring the bell lap incorrectly, the runners still have to run the correct distance.

What would have happened if the officials placed the whole field in the wrong spot. Would every team have been DQ'ed and not made the final?

Although it may have been difficult in the heat of the race but no one is mentioning the incoming runner. Technically he could have stopped in the zone and told the outgoing runner to come back.

Still haven't seen the official explanation.

Something similar happened about 15 years ago in the ACC indoor championships in the DMR. I think it was the women's race. Anyway, the officials put the next runners on the track one lap early. For most of the teams, this was the one and only time they were going to run the DMR during the season to qualify for nationals. A couple coaches noticed and yelled at their runners to not take the baton and get off the track. Almost all the teams made the exchange. When the race was over it became obvious when the times were just insanely fast. The two or three teams that did not make the exchange and completed the entire race correctly were awarded the top places. The rest of the teams were ranked based on where they placed in their 200m shorter race. The problem was these teams were looking for NCAA qualifying times so they adjusted the times based upon the split of the runner who ran one less lap and the NCAA accepted them.

Yes, but things are happening really fast and she is just focused on getting the handoff not thinking through about if the official gave her wrong information and correcting them or moving up. She has to make a split decision: she lines up where the official told her or she ignores them and moves back. Easy to see how the mistake was made from the athlete's POV.

If the officials were wrong the blame is on them.

Not so sure about that. Goodwin didn't run a very good leg. She was clearly behind when she got it.

Each athlete does not have a single official assigned to them. Lynna simple went to the wrong blue line. She went to the one that marked the "End" of the exchange zone and not the blue line "Start" of the exchange zone, like every other athletes has done in Olympic 4x4 and World Championship history. Somehow all the other athletes from numerous countries knew where to line up but her.

Again. Lynna Irby F'd up.

Why do people just run with the story of someone pointing her the wrong way? There is no evidence for that. And even If it was true the rules were still broken and they should be banned. Scandalous

On the other hand Goodwin was probably tying up and then says "what?? I gotta run another 40 meters??"

How many officials do they use for exchange zones in the 4x100 relay? Maybe they could use some of them for the 4x4. It might help to avoid these mistakes in the future. Things like this should never happen. I've seen officials at waterfall starts tell a runner to get his toe of the line. Why can't they be of more help on exchange zones? Asking for a friend.
