What I find interesting is that people such as yourself insert this idea that people are 'not as tough as in the past' yet have won more medals and competitions than those of the past. Pretty interesting how you think its possible to speculate what someone of the past would have done when no others have even come close to her achievements.
yeah how crazy is it that you can be the self/media proclaimed Greatest Of All Time and when you compete you are "over coming so many obstacles!" (you are the overwhelming favorite, big time sponsors, great talent, great coaches, fantastic support system- what obstacles are you over coming???)
then when you quit, you now..... overcoming obstacles... amazing.

How in the world is SHE putting all the attention on her? It's not her fault that she's the reigning champion and most decorated gymnast in history so the media puts all of her attention on her. Even she had fallen and broken her leg all of the attention still would have been on her and not her teammates.
Also everyone here is ignoring the fact that gymnastics is NOT running around in circles on a track. One mistake could lead to DEATH. If she isn't in the right headspace it's probably really freaking dangerous to do her sport.

If she got injured would that be different? You say this was in her control, but often phsycial injuries can be the result of over training. And yes, physical injury is different then mental health. If her leg snapped in two it’s obvious she shouldn’t compete. But she herself came out and said she cracked under the pressure. It’s a stain on her record.
Also, do I need to point out how 'in the past' if someone had 'quit for mental issues' you would have even known about it? The very thing you blame for younger generations 'mental issues' is the only reason you even are aware of said issues. 'In the past' it would have just been 'so and so pulled out due to injury' or something other thing. You wouldn't hear hardly anything about it. It is complete fantasy that somehow people are becoming weaker or some other such bs. Its just that now you get to know everything about people. And if there is any truth to social media causing 'mental issues' it is likely related to the fact you get to know everything about them.

Can anybody recall another top level athlete deciding they didn’t have half way through and telling everybody “sorry guys, I’m not feeling it?” Football player Vontae Davis is the only one that comes to mind. But he did it during a regular season game and he was hardly one of his teams best players at the time.
This is WEAK. She has soooooooo many young girls looking up to her. She just demonstrated that it’s ok to quit.

Well when we have videos of olympians past landing vaults on busted ankles and then videos of current Olympian’s withdrawing because of stress, yeah it’s safe to say this generation is weaker.

Yeah, she is a great gymnast with many accolades, but she signed up for these games and took a spot from someone, then quit when the going got tough. That is weak.
If I had to pick one gymnast to represent my country in an ultimate gymnast showdown, it would be biles strictly because of these games. Give me Strug any day of the week.

For her team mates, they've made the team knowing that if they didn't perform their best they wouldn't
make the team. Those that don't have it mentally to do that are already sitting at home and don't have

I would speculate that Biles has had some nagging injury, it affected her training and it has become clear
to her that if she doesn't perform at her (current) best she is not going to win. It is a new feeling for her and

OK, finally we have identified a valid excuse for her pulling out of the competition.
Gymnastics is an incredibly dangerous sport, and yes, every participant is risking very serious, potentially "devastating" bodily harm. Pun intended, maybe.
So, that being conceded, what say you if tomorrow or the next day she announces that she is going to compete in the all around and/or individual events?
She is more talented than those people. But she is a quitter and not a team player.
Why does she seem to get a pass for succumbing to the pressure but a young NBA basketball player or other athlete doesn't? A professional athlete who misses his free throws, is too scared to shoot, strikes out, commits errors, misses a penalty shot, is called a bum, a choker. Professional sports athletes have been threatened and shot. Ben Simmons has been ripped apart yhe last month, a couple of Brits have been maligned for missing penalty kicks. Of course that's unacceptable but many are applauding Biles for not handling pressure.

Completely different, Tom is not out there performing alone, he has guys blocking for him allowing him time to see the field, he has guys running routes to get open or in a position to catch a ball, he also has guys that are great and can outplay the guys covering them. He didn't have that his last season in NE and he was average at best and crying the whole season, really was close to quitting anyways.
After the qualifying , USA gymnastics was informed the judging could not " fudge " scoring any longer after complaints from Russia.
This has nothing to do with the pandemic. It is a problem with many young people that has been going on for the past 10 years or so.
We have kids that are quitting the high school cross country team because it's just too much pressure. And this isn't some national level team. This is just a mediocre team that qualifies for state most years but not every year. I don't know where they are creating this pressure from. Most of these runners are not even all state level athletes. They are just run of the mill varsity athletes that run in the high 16s and low 17s.

You just reminded me of a kid I coached a few years ago. He panicked and quit on his relay team right before a 4x200 in the armory- he hyperventilated on his way to the subway and didn't show up. He is one of the young people you speak of. In his defense he was used to bailing out. When he wasn't ready to take a test he took it on another day. He was a legit sprinter and soccer player but his career was weeded out early.
