But I do want to. Did you not see that I started off with the question of how much of a difference it made at Arcadia? Please answer so that I can better understand the impact to Brown's time trial. Brown obviously had much more impact but if 15 seconds, then Young received at least 5 and Sprout would have received 5 if Young would have led correct? So Sprout wins at 8:35 and 8:45 for Young but maybe even more.
astro, this isn't cycling or triathlon. Runners aren't penalized for drafting. It is perfectly legal.
Also, a time trial is a race. From Lydiard to Canova, coaches have been prescribing them for decades. And, yes, she could probably go faster in a race, maybe low 9:30's with her current fitness.
All world records, all high school records, all national records have had "drafting." There has yet to be a solo effort because that would not be recognized as a race. At least Brown ran with two other competitors, making it legitimate.

Oh, yeah, by the way, congratulations to Brynn Brown on a spectacular TT. So it was not a sanctioned race! So there was no curb. So she had assistance in the form of pacing and drafting. So it was “only” hand-timed. So it wasn’t the finals of the Olympic 3000 meters. SHE STILL RAN A 9:39 3200, and even if she wakes up tomorrow morning with no legs, she can still say, for the rest of her life, that she ran a blistering 9:39.67! Way to go, Brynn!

The logic of pacing and drafting is flawed in regards to a record especially when considered an all women's/girls record. This very talented runner had a superior male athlete running ahead of her through the finish line. A high school, open USA, or open world track record would never be ratified under those conditions. Plus what about the timing and the track set up? How many watches (or FAT) were used at the actually 3000 m finish line? Did the turns have cones set up according to HS rules. There are rules in place not only to ensure a great athlete like this establishes a record but also to protect the athlete who's record is being broken which was run under the rules.

Drafting is drafting. Not sure why people are so unable to admit that the way this was deliberately set up where a runner is positioned between two faster runners to draft off of and whose sole purpose was to shuttle her around the track would result in a measurable time boost. You telling me this was a time trial. OK. Is this how time trials are normally set up? Do other top female two milers train like this? If it was a time trial as you claim then it was one set up to boost one runners time as much as humanly possible. That is an odd way to conduct a time trial. But in no way is this comparable to a real race, not even with a pacer. Sorry but I find the idea offensive that people would try to compare this to actual records achieved without the special shuttle service. It was a set up to create a time boost. Hard to deny.

Yes. I have watched dozens this year and most are run this way. Hart ran her 1600 exactly like this.
Stop acting like drafting is such a big deal man. Look up team Oregon drafting. They found for running drafting of a runner in front reduces effort by 1-2%. This would be more if there was headwind of course, but watch the video again. You occasionally hear the wind in the mic, which happens pretty much anytime you’re recording outside, judging my the hair moving on the woman sitting to the left, and the fact that the sound of the wind is low. Wind is negligible. Plus running on an oval you would get both head and tailwind. Team Oregon also found that drafting is negligible unless you’re 1-2 yard behind the running in front of you. This occurs for most of the race, but 1200 to go you can see she is definitely not 6 feet behind.Getting back to the 1-2%. For maths sake we will take it as 9 minutes 40 seconds. With all the examples I have listed she would get a MAX benefit of just over 11 seconds for the full race, but because she was not drafting for the full race, it would be more like 7 seconds (5/8 times 2% for 5/8 laps drafted) so with all your magical drafting nonsense, she still would have broken the national record as a junior. This is with the max consideration of two percent, it would be 3.6 seconds as 5/8 of 1 percent. Stop dogging on this girl because she’s good.

Yeah it’s a shame she didn’t just run at the state meet that is going on, or go to Arcadia, brooks pr, or new balance and run this time. I hate when kids make the best of their situation and prove they can run fast without it being an actual meet! We should all just accept the fact that there are no races and wallow in self pity!

Actually if you watch Hart's time trial, for 3/4 of the run she is 2 to 3 meters back from the leader. So she was not really drafting.

Brown was close behind leader through 6 minutes, but then fades back out of drafting range. Great run.

Who is the God of records? NFHS? If a high schooler runs 9:39 in a country with no silly governing body, do you say that it did not happen? I recognize Brown's performance as beating Tuohy and so do many others here. What if some state associations accept videos this year for records? Many high school coaches are already. What if the high school 4 minute attempt on Saturday gets 2 pros to perfectly pace it at 3:58 so that the guys can draft? It will still count whether you sourpusses like it or not.
