Yes, I should have said "presumed to be" less lethal. Time will tell, but that is typical of viruses, and experts have been saying this is likely.

And yes, my immunology wife does share this opinion as does my Ph.D. in pharmacology/lawyer brother, my research scientist sister and her research scientist/pharmacist (don't ask) husband.

I do understand that the virus would be expected to become less lethal over time because evolution favors viruses that don't kill the host.

However, I see no reason to believe that the version of the virus with a mutation that makes it more transmissible also has a mutation making it less lethal. From an evolution standpoint, it doesn't make sense for that to be likely in such a short amount of time.

But I'm not a virologist so maybe there is something specific to corona viruses that changes the odds?

Bottom line is that you shouldn't believe it without scientific evidence.

Well, most of them still are. Democrats are partially to blame too...we have next to vilified people who don't go to college, we haven't raised the minimum wage in over a decade, and those of us in the stock market have gotten richer and richer while the working class has not.

There remains (and this has been true for at least 2 years now) ONLY two reasons for someone to support Trump:

1) JUST stupid

2) Racist

There are no other possibilities. The events of Jan. 6 only solidify my CORRECT view.

Since the pandemic, my family has Zoom calls weekly, and the virus is a big topic with them since so many of them are scientists. When viruses mutate, they almost ALWAYS become less lethal...that is by design. You are wrong about that. You can find a ton of stuff about that online.

I guess we will see. I can't imagine the US allowing a disgruntled former US President to remain in exile in a country that would house him. It's a slap in the face to the US at a minimum, but more importantly, he has information that they would pay for, and if they allow him to stay there, that's a BIG incentive for him to give them info. Just seems like a big security risk.

Actually, when a virus mutates its lethality is *most* likely not to be affected--a great many mutations are possible in these RNA viruses and only a few would affect lethality.

Otherwise, if lethality *is* affected it could go in any direction. As many have observed (in this thread and elsewhere), if the virus becomes markedly more (or more rapidly) lethal to its hosts, it will tend to stop spreading: The hosts will more frequently die before "sharing." And if the virus becomes less (or less rapidly) lethal then there is indeed more of a chance that it will be shared by its host and spread more widely through a population.

But there is no teleology here; there is no "design" in a virus's mutations or evolution. Evolution and natural selection--the Blind Watchmaker, to borrow a phrase--will *tend* to favor survival of a less-lethal virus. But there is no guarantee that a less-lethal mutation will even arise.
