this is not a good thing

being more contagious leads to an exponential rise in cases and therefore deaths. Even if it is less lethal. The sheer numbers of infected people will overcome the lower lethality.

COVID-19 is already extremely transmissible. You can't do a math equation on this unless you KNOW how less lethal it is. Less lethal is a good thing.

Where is this "less lethal" thing coming from? I keep hearing it here but when checking around on the official sites, there seems to be no mention of the new strain being less lethal. They tend to assert that it is not more lethal, but do not say it is any less lethal.

Correct me if i am wrong, please.

Yes, I should have said "presumed to be" less lethal. Time will tell, but that is typical of viruses, and experts have been saying this is likely.

And yes, my immunology wife does share this opinion as does my Ph.D. in pharmacology/lawyer brother, my research scientist sister and her research scientist/pharmacist (don't ask) husband.

No. I do not believe the new variant will result in that. Do not forget that we DO have vaccines for this now (that works against this variant). A new less lethal variant is good.

No, not for real. Red districts have consistently lost share of real GDP from 2010 to 2020. The districts have lower median household incomes on average and are less likely to be college educated. This has been extensively studied.

Not exactly. The question wasn't who is responsible but who is to blame.

52% of Republicans believe Biden is a great deal (35%) or somewhat (17%) to blame.

Obviously, Biden shares some of the blame because he beat Trump. So 52% of Republicans feel that if Biden had just let Trump win like he was supposed to do then none of this would have happened.

Makes perfect sense.

The problem is that you think the outcome of getting COVID-19 is binary:

1) Die

2) Don't Die

What you fail to realize (and your wife, and her boyfriend, and the others you mentioned) is that those are not the only two outcomes. Too simplistic.

Even for the binary outcome to be better, the new variant has to be less lethal on a magnitude comparable to the increase in transmisability.

But you and your family go on with the Trumpian-logic on this one. No worries we have a vaccine and it will all go away very soon - perhaps by Easter.
