My goal of sub 4:00 1500-I will not stop until I reach my goal.

I've been beating myself up about this race pretty badly. I just have to put it behind me and move on.

I may need to change the tactics. I was trying to run their race from the start. I positioned myself in the front for no reason at all. I'm not running sub 4 yet...hell I'm not running sub 405 yet. Instead of going out and trying to kill the first 800meters, I need to A) stay relaxed for the first 400 meters B)start picking it up with 600meters to go.

I believe that I'll run a much smarter and faster race if I run closer to 211-212 through the 800 instead of 208-210.

We'll see. Bad race...time to move on.

Seems to me that you're better off running with your teammate, Jose Orozco. He ran a 4:04.28. If he's running a 4:04, why can't you? Suck it up and do it. Your either in sub 4 shape or not. You're not, sorry I gotta call it like I see it.

Eddy Lee, sub-4 is not going to happen this season if you keep racing every weekend. Train 3 weeks then take another crack at it.

When I ran 4:10 I split 800 in 2:11

When I ran 4:06 I split 800 in 2:10

All depends how you close, but if you wanna go sub 4, you\'d better be splitting closer to 2:06

Will you always run your fastest time possible if you run an even pace the whole race? Or does negative splitting sometimes work better? I know some wr's have been set with negative splitting. I don't know, but if you start off a little slower, does the lactic acid not build up as much, allowing you to make up time with a faster split. I'm asking cause I've had more success so far this year going out conservatively and then closing hard the last 2 laps. Last weekend I ran my first ever 1500(I've just run the 1600 and mile before) and exceeded my expectations. I ran 4:05.57, with splits of roughly 67.5, 67, 64.5 and then I closed in 46.

I've refrained from joining this thread, though it is very interesting.

The other day I did 5x400m with 2-3 min rest in 58-60.

Racing 1500m this weekend. Still feeling a bit sick, we'll see how it goes.

No way in hell was I going to read this whole thread, but I'll just add in my experience.

Don't overthink it. I'm sure you've been told this a thousand times, but my best races didn't come because of a perfectly laid out race. Hell, my first time under 4:00 was because some d-bag elbowed me in the chest 600m into the race so he could pass me on the inside. I got pissed and ended up walking his ass down over the final stretch to a huge PR (8+ seconds). No pacing, no splits, no plan, just find the right person and stick no matter what. Once I got under, there was no fixation on the time anymore, and I ended up racing better for the whole rest of the season because of it. The race doesn't usually break until the last 700m anyways, so you're better off being ready for a huge negative split than worrying about being a couple seconds off at the 800.

If you spend your race thinking about splits instead of paying attention to the race, you're doing yourself a disservice. Your workouts aren't all that different from where I was, and I think Sub 4 is in the cards, but you can't think your way there. Best of luck.

This is good advice, but Eddy's problem is training, not racing. He does all out workouts much faster than he should, has no aerobic base, and just basically shoots himself in the foot before his season starts each year.

In my quest for sub 4, I've been given for my last 2 workouts: 1000s at threshold with some 800s at 3K pace, and now what boils down to a 4 mile tempo at threshold. I only have a month til my peak race. I don't get why we never do speed. Truly frustrating.

Yeah, what this guy said. Maybe you meant that you need to split 800 at 2:12 AT YOUR CURRENT ABILITY, but 4:00-flat for 1500m is 64 a lap and since you are at the level you are, you need to be about 63-63-64-48 = 3:58-3:59

All this talk about "being relaxed" is garbage. You can "feel relaxed" and still run all-out mile pace. The reason it feels hard is that you are really capable of 66-67 pace for the 1500 now and you are forcing it when you try for 64-65.

I do feel sorry for you because your coach has no idea what he is doing.

racing the 1500 is 86% aerobic and only 14% anaerobic. 1 month is plenty of time to get your speed up. Building up the base and getting the longer threshold stuff is important right now. a month is a long time to sharpen up.

Mmm... well if his offseason/preseason stuff isn't in order, it doesn't matter how much icing you put on it, it'll never be a cake.

You need that aerobic strength to be able to close- if you go out in 2:08 and you're already feeling it, there's nothing that you can do. Intervals can only get you so far if you're not building them on anything.

Yeah obviously it would be ridiculous to dig through this thread to find them, but I remember Eddy Lee posting training where he'd run 35 miles for the week with something like 6-7 anaerobic workouts. He'd do 2x1200 all out in the morning, then 4x400 all out in the afternoon. 4x800 in 2:09, 2:18, 2:25, etc. Just examples.

The thing that got me to PR in the 1500 was just doing a normal high mileage training load, lots of threshold training etc, then in the last 4 weeks before the 1500 I did 2 sessions of 10x400 at 65-66 with 400 jog recovery, along with more VO2/LT work, mainly because I wasn't targeting a 1500 and was training for longer stuff farther out in the season. But I guess I'm about as fast as Eddy Lee with my 4:07, and I'm a guy who couldn't break 58 in the 400 without a generous timer and a running start.
