As I said, I've been there in marathons. My sympathy. But you gave it your best shot and did the best you could and that's always worthwhile. Enjoy the rest of your stay and congrats to your wife.

Too bad things didn't turn out the way you wanted Phil. It was really interesting to see if JS' way of training would work but I guess it didn't.

JS you called out Steve Magness on Twitter
So you're that loser Steve Magness huh, the guy who never bettered your high school times - and I'm pretty sure you have NEVER run a marathon.

So I guess this breaks your streak of every single runner whom you’ve coached improving.
No it doesn`t ! Phil ran a new PB after 10 years at 10 miles....that`s real improvement! lol

I am pretty sure Steve, or for that matter anymore knows this JS guy.
Besides being clueless about running, you can't even form a coherent sentence.

This thread was enjoyable to follow and I have to say I know Phil didn't hit his goal, but I have mad respect for him as well. I could only dream of running that fast for even half the distance.
Great job Phil!
agree -- thanks for posting training and good luck for better races ahead
Well done Phil. Solid effort out there.
I think Phil would have run far faster with more conservative pacing and the wheels not coming off after the blazing fast start.
The marathon is a long race that can’t be repeated that frequently.
With that in mind. JS probably brought him into PR shape on quite low mileage - lower than he asked about in fact.
2:19 was quite lofty especially for 4 months of training or so.
If JS did bring him into PR shape after such a long gap and compared to a prior high mileage program that proves some strength in JS’s program. But I’m sure slightly higher mileage would help Phil’s marathon goals.
80mpw is still low for this sort of training. And I’m sure Lagat did more like 80/90 odd in his marathon training.
Phil,
Great run...solid effort.
You went for it.
Phil, would you consider regrouping and going after a fast half in the next month?
Also, if ‘why not/ js ? ‘ is actually Steve Magness that would be hilarious.
Lots of people train “perfectly” for the marathon and miss their goals massively.
I haven’t looked through the results at CIM, but I’m sure lots of guys ran near 1:10 at the half and faded massively. I trained pretty hard last year for CIM and ran 1:10/1:16 so I can’t throw stones.
Phil will definitely come back faster, and JS did a great job motivating his athlete. JS is a great “hype guy” and that’s a rare skill.
He got Phil stoked and kept him stoked.
His personality made this a classic thread. I honestly thank them both for making their training public.... Following along was awesome.
Countless guys/gals missed the OTQ this year and did more mileage and traditional training. Even the best “training recipes” seem to lead people to injuries and sub-par races.
I think one of the most important tasks in a marathon training block is to figure out the pace one can sustain. Test workouts over shorter distances usually confirm this. On important part of a race is to execute this pace. Missing discipline in race pace is more the athletes problem rather than the coach? Maybe it was the coaches fault to create a wrong mindsrt on possible pace?

The problem is the coach trained a marathoner like a sprinter!
It's MAGIC, see!!!!
Well...this will be the last comment I write on this thread for a while. Next time the mission to coach " 2:19 on 70-80 mpw" ….or more precisely 60-75 mpw will be completed in this "case". We will just do some adjustments and then the target will be reached. Cheers! :)
Max King has faded bad too.
Things didn’t work out. If I had a time machine I’d go back and try to run a 2:25. I do think I may have pulled it off and I would have been very happy with the performance. 2019 was a great year of running for me and I look forward to 2020 being even better following my first full year of training since 2012. Thank you to the supporters and I hope the trolls enjoy another year living in their mothers basement.
This was my first Letsrun thread and although I enjoyed it along the way, I have disliked it more and more the last month. I have no desire to start a blog, YouTube channel, or have an online following. I look forward to returning to my own little circle of running friends, three of which ran 2:22 yesterday. I suppose they are failures as well for not reaching their 2:19 dream? Keep fighting the good fight. Good day
You going to try for a 2:25 at Houston?
Perfect reply.
Thanks again for the great roller coaster..... it was nice to live vicariously through your training. I did 20x400 Friday and was thinking about you at CIM.
No, the marathon is just another race to me, I’m not chasing anything. I’ll return to the frozen tundra and regroup for the spring season. Maybe shoot for a fast 8k in Chicago in March and a 1/2 pr at Grandmas in June. Not really sure yet. I’ll take the next month to think about it.

Thank you for this thread Phil! It was great following along your journey and you did your best.
Will you be working with JS in the future or train on your own plan? I would also like to know what you would have done differently trainingwise, now in hindsight, type of workouts, mileage, etc?
Anyway, again massive respect to you, Phil!
We will be back here the day Phil has broken sub 2:19 and then shortly comment the few adjustments we did to get it work out. Now.......Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all from us. Cheers! :)
