I was planning to do the double marathon, but this race series included more options than a marathon. In addition to signing up for one, two, or three marathons, a person could opt for a 10k, a half marathon, a 50k, or a 50 mile race on one, two, or three days. The distance was determined by the number of times the runner or walker did the certified loops, and the loops could be short or long (two short loops equaled one long loop). It was a bit confusing at first (all that arithmetic!) but I figured it out beforehand and knew exactly what my plan would be each day. There were three aid stations, with water, soda, and Gatorade, plus real food and energy bars. Patient and cheerful volunteers staffed the aid stations and were unfailingly pleasant despite having to sit in the heat all day.
Time limits were amazingly generous and forgiving. The races officially started at 6 am, with a 5 am early start (and that turned out to be flexible) and ended at 9 pm every day (although I believe everyone finished well before that deadline). I opted to take the early start each day. When I arrived on Saturday morning at 4:35 am, Parvaneh said that some people had already started, so I turned on my headlamp and took off. I couldn’t see any reason to just hang around waiting if I could be moving. This turned out to be a great idea. In fact, on Sunday I started at 4:15, so I could try to ‘beat the heat’ before the sun came up.

Maybe the crew weren't involved or perhaps they had a 'don't ask don't tell' policy amongst themselves?

Finally, the lights at end of tonal as headed up the mountain on 13 miles ascend to 8,000 feet. This was very familiar territory to me as last year I had so much difficulties on this hill specially the last 5 miles with savior stomach problems. I was in good shape now for this one, still feeling strong and ready to take the beast done on his back.

There are very few people participating and they are spread out over a mile or two.
Some people started close to 4 AM in darkness.
Basically, no one would have any clue who was doing what and at what point in their "race" any of these people were until they came in and said, "Well, I'm done. That was a marathon."
Think about the last couple miles of a marathon, how easy would it be for someone to turn around a little early on one of the last couple of laps and report it as another full loop? Especially imagine if that person had just missed a BQ several times in a real race.
Or are we supposed to believe that there is someone at each turnaround point from 4 AM to 9 PM marking down each runner that came through and that this information was used to verify the reported results from the participant?
I don't understand how any official organization could view this I-Ran events as a race. There is no racing going on at all. At best, these are supported training runs in which you can record your own time.
Crazy to me that people will pay $70 or whatever for this just so they can accumulate another race finish in order to get an additional shiny star on the Marathon Maniacs website.

i have run a marathon but never in the olympics and have never got a medal at the olympics

So, if SH is crewing/pacing for her maybe he counts his time beside her for his marathon 26.2, but if so, at 11:00:00 that does not match any of her splits and her time of 46:06.10 for 135 averages to sub 9 hour marathon pace
throw in the 11:00 for 26.2 and you got to average 7 for the next one, I guess these #s could be unrelated or maybe his is not consecutive who knows

And Kevin .....You are right. Kevin Albert is a maniac and has a ton of I Ran finishes. Could be either one on her BW crew. The point is this marathon bagging disease appears to be widespread. I live in Maine and apparently there were a boatload of them who ran the Maine Marathon. It's a bit ridiculous IMO. However, I am old school (1980's) when we took a little personal pride in our performances, not so much in obvious PR stunts which in my opinion are BS. It is (or was) supposed to be sport, not cheap socializing and ego stroking. Such is progress i guess.

I think you pegged it, but collecting marathons for whatever reason (Medals, 50 States/ Maniacs, etc.) beats sitting on the couch.

can someone explain Marathon Maniacs to me? You get points for the total number of marathons or the frequency of such? So, that's why someone would pay PM money do run a "marathon" on a Tuesday or whatever? So they can say they ran 3 "marathons" in one week or something?
Do times matter at all, or is it strictly collecting finishes?
Bottomline, what is the point? Who are the Marathon Maniacs and why does anyone care so much that they would pay nearly 100 bucks to run 2 miles back and forth for a "marathon" at a park in San Antonio at 5 AM? And why does the Marathon Maniac encourage this sort of behavior?
