saturday 14 in four runs. 5 miles along the Sandia Crest in snow and mud at 10,400-10,678 ft.

sunday 17 really, really slowly. felt like crap.

100.2 miles for the week. had three excellent runs and one other decent run. making progress. fourth consecutive week at one hundred miles. can't wait to start racing again.

hey jonesy - i am definitely doing the boston high performance series. they're a staple for my club...as well as about ten minutes from my apartment. lucky me!

so if you want some pacing duties done..or if you want to throw down in a 1500, i'm more than up for it. too bad we can't get eddy out here!

in that case, boingo, don't forget about the dinner special at the vfw outpost on the cooldown circuit there! I will be up for a 15 or a 5 and probably won't need any pacing help: I did a 5 there last year and although I ran badly because I was really tired from moving twice and driving across the country just to get to the meet in time, there were lots of guys at different levels in the race to pace from. I appreciate the offer, though. That could in fact be a great venue for eddy to cap off his season, good weather for that time of year, late afternoon-evening races, and sub-4 comp.

So here is what happened: I run this 8 miler that consists of four 2-mile loops, pretty much flat. Thursday ran it easy in 63ish. Following day went back, just happened to feel good after loop 1 and went with it. Here's the splits: 15:38, 14:24, 13:33, 12:33. Went after it the last mile a little bit. So I got a huge confidence boost from it and signed up for a 5K scheduled for today:

Gorgeous weather, couldn't ask for better. 19:31 unofficially. 5:53 first mile, trying to be conservative. 1.5 mark had a long (not stride changing steepness) hill that I didn't know about. 6:56 for the 2nd mile (12:49 at this point). Last 1.1 was 6:46, so maybe 6:06 last mile. Just nice to get it out of the way. Not smartest run in the world but I really just let it hurt.

Funny side: High school kid won it last year so I assumed when this kid went off at the start really fast, it was him. I see him afterward, say good job, how'd it go. Proceeds to tell me he ran a 5 flat first mile, his PR in the mile is 4:56, so he finished 7th. And I thought I was surprised at my split.

very nice improvement, sweeney todd. you are going to break 19 very soon, based on that 8M run, and you are basically very near the aerobic shape that radical ron was in early last summer. Are you working on your speed with strides, 200s, and hill work? Be ambitious with your tempos and you'll see a rapid drop to sub-18 for 5k.

Not a big strides guy. Always run with my team, then send them to do drills and strides on their own. I do a good number of hills, so I guess that's a start. I do not recover extremely well from very hard efforts, so I am thinking of just one quality day a week or two every 10 days, just mix em up. But I'd like to just see what adding a 7th day and getting more into the 50s mpw zone would get me without overdoing it on the workouts.

That would help, but strides do not have to be very taxing at all, and usually aren't. You should join your team for the strides and drills.

Jonesy... congrats on a new 3K PR! Then to go and run a 4:46 mile. Good JOB! Impressive to follow that up with a 16:33 5K on the road. Make sure you're resting adequately. There's lots of stuff going around.

I'll be racing indoor this Sat. Planning on running the 800m and Mile. I've taken more days off recently. Seems I'm tired a lot lately. Still averaging around 60-65 miles/week.

Went to Iowa State NCAA Qualifer and ran the mile and 800m. Man, was I way out of my league. Managed to run a 4:37.95 virtually by myself so the race functioned like a solo tt. Everybody was way ahead of me. I was very encouraged by this effort as I felt strong and redeemed the last race. I now know I'm not over-training. A couple hours later followed this up with a 2:07.24 800m. Went out in a 60.xx opening 400m and it was all I could do at that point. Regardless, a 1.6sec drop in my 800m comeback PR. This was very humbling as I used to throw down a 1:55 back in the day and most of the guys in this race busted 2. Oh well, it's a good start back as I haven't been focusing/training for the 800m. Look out Solo Joe!

nice double in those conditions. there is nothing like a good track meet to show you where you stand in the pecking order. get in one with some low 4:30 guys and high 4:20 guys and you should get a good one. and where there's progress in the 800, probably down close to 2 this year, there'll be significant progress in the 1500 and mile.

I did 100 miles again last week, fifth one hundred mile week out of the last six weeks. After some mild weather, I got to run out on the lakefront trail for the first time in months, with only about a mile of ice and snow left. I ran 14.6 in 1:52 on Saturday, way overdressed, and then did the same run on Sunday in 1:40:56, with the last four miles in 6:18, 6:27 (1/4 M of snow), 6:38 (1/2 M of snow), and 6:04. It snowed again today, but I am feeling very optimistic about what I can do in training and racing once I can get out consistently for steady runs and hard tempos. I'm not going to be able to run very far several days a week for the next few weeks, because I'll have solo baby care a few times, so I'll try to hammer some track and tempo workouts after those days.
