Good half split, all downhill from here, might still get it

What was Phil's original plan to cross the half in?
I can't find it now, but I thought they said 1:09:30 to 1:10? and then try to negative split?
1:09.30
Half at 1:10:03 and about as race plan. But I admit it doesn`t look Phil can hold or pick up the pace. But it has been
a great journey and thread and Phil will get his sub 2: 19 next time. That`s running life , ups and downs. :)
25k 1:23:45
he's behind schedule :(
From 20-25k Phil needed 17:19.

A good coach learns from this. We will see what his report is but I'm expecting him to discuss being woefully unprepared for the slow climbs and descents. Since you kept him on flat surfaces for his fast workouts, he would have done better off at a marathon like Houston. You have to train for the distance AND the course/conditions. He was 0/2 on that.

lol at this coach j.s.
30K 1:41:53
25-30k: 18:06.
This will get bloody. Will our protagonist still break 2h30?
He's done.
Doesn't look like Phil or Zach will get the OTQ at CIM. On the bright side, Phil's wife is on track for a 3:14 finish (goal 3:15)
Nice coaching job JS!
The entire top 50 is still on pace for the OTQ at 35k, so the circumstances weren't that bad
35K 2:01:26
Zach is done.
Phil is running slower than 6 min per mile, probably 6:10-6:15.
But anyway, he is a man.
There is no easy way to run fast, especially a marathon.
Doubles, mileage about 5000-5500 miles per year and a lot of core workout, plyometrics, hills and so on and maybe he will
run a nice time.
30-35k in 19:33. 2h30 will be tough at the rate the pace slows down.
Phil and I will be back at the marathon. But now I think it will wait for a while. I will get him running faster at shorter distances first and back to his best 5 k/10k and beyond. Then he will be ready to run a fast marathon. Speed time!
The main key is to get his threshold better.
He bettered his 10 mile PR. He can probably also run a fast half.
60-70 miles is a nice mileage for 5 k (not fast).
Running on flat surface could be nice for running at stadium.
With that system he could run sub 15 5k, but no way sub 30 at 10 k.
Running 40-50 min per day is for children, not for a fast marathon.

Check out how much trained Brendan Foster for 3 km and other guys.
There is no Magic ways to run fast.
Only hard work several years in a row !
