>>Holman turned 14 on November 19 and followed up his 5K record by taking second at the USATF National Championships Cross Country race in Wisconsin for his age group last weekend. That has to be the mistake. The article must've meant "turned 13" not 14. It would literally defeat the entire premise of the article if he had actually turned 14 years old.
<<
That's not how I read the article. It says he broke the age 13 record in a race on Nov. 9, then turned 14 on Nov 19, and ran the USATF XC race.
Damn... I guess I missed that. Alright, I'm officially stumped.
It literally makes no sense like, how was he born in 2005, in the 8th grade in 2019-2020 and is STILL in high school?? At the very least, he would've graduated spring 2024. Makes zero sense. It doesn't add up
There's no way CIF would permit a 19-going-on-20 year old to compete in any sports at this margin. He turns 20 the same year he graduates HIGH school. That's insane
I was born in 2005 and I graduated in 2023. He is hardly younger than I am.
He'll be 20 the year he graduates high school. I know this because he was always a year older than my son when they competed youth USATF and my son is now a freshman in college. Heck my son will be 19 in July and going into his sophomore year!

His NCSA page now says he's 19 as today is his birthday. Before that it said he was 18, but I thought it was a simple mistake. I guess not.
But now my question remains, how on earth is he still in high school??
He was in grade 8 for 2019-2020 school year, so at that time he was in the same grade category as all 2024 graduates. Then all of a sudden... he wasn't. How did he just delay the start of high school?? It makes no sense at all. California absolutely did not just give you an extra year because of COVID either.
Man, if he really was held back a year, I don’t think he would be eligible to compete in HS sports this year.
And he’s turning 19 in 4 days. Crazy.
well, he for sure satisfied this part - “No student, whose 19th birthday is attained prior to June 15, shall participate or practice on any team in the following school year. A student, whose 19th birthday is on or before June 14, is ineligible.”
if he really is 19 he shouldn’t be able to compete. the CIF is strict when it comes to age-gap rules as the quoted post states, so there has to be some shady stuff going on or simply misinformation. you can’t just “delay” starting HS sports either
I'm fairly sure what he did was not attend school during covid. This makes a lot of sense, education during covid was borderline useless and it would save eligibility. Also the middle school to high school transition is as good a time as ever to essentially be held back. You're already going to a new school and meeting new people.

It's possible, but I find it very unlikely. If it was that easy, everyone would've done it. And I say this as a Californian who is also in the Sac-Joaquin section like he is, and I would've absolutely loved to have skipped out and wait an extra year when COVID hit. Sadly nobody in my area had a choice though.

Why should he not be able to compete as the quoted post states? “No student, whose **19th birthday is attained prior to June 15**, shall participate or practice on any team in the **following** school year (note it says following year, not current year).
I don't know if this just poorly worded, but since his 19th birthday was not before June 15th, he could participate the following year as well?!? So if was held back, he is age eligible next year as well? (but ineligible for other reasons).
From this small excerpt, it is not clear from what point in time "following year" is based on, so he probably wouldn't be eligible next year, but it sure sounds like he is eligible this year without any "shady stuff" going on.
Someone could delay starting high school, and there might be good reason for it, medical condition, family out of the country, etc. That probably doesn't cost you a year of eligibility. And COVID probably blurred up things up further and allowed other reasons.

OMG. It really does say in this profile that he’s 19. That is ridiculous
Okay, so I have confirmation regarding Broen Holman's age situation from a "friend" or "friend of a friend" of Holman himself. So basically, Broen Holman repeated 8th grade because of COVID-19 not because he was dumb, but because
1. He wanted to hone in on his running skills. and...
2. He did not want to miss out on a lot of his high school running opportunities if he enrolled in 9th grade for the 2020-2021 school year where most meets/running opportunities were cancelled because of COVID
Summary: Broen Holman IS the age of a typical college freshman but CHOSE to repeat 8th grade so that he could hone in on running and so he wouldn't miss out on opportunities.

Wow. I didn’t know it was even legal to participate in HS sports senior year after being held back no matter the reason.
I’m sure there are sooooo many people who wanted to repeat a grade just for this reason, but they were afraid to ask because they didn’t think that they’d be allowed to do HS sports senior year if they repeated a grade

That's crazy. I had no idea that was possible. If I had known about that option I 100% would've taken it.
I had no idea it was legal either. Sounds crazy to me, but I guess there's no denying it at this point.
