Another factor to women's decline in endurance swimming performances as they age is that their physical body changes result in increased drag factors due to the viscous nature of the aquatic medium. While increased strength could offset some of that increased drag in shorter races, it would be more difficult to accomplish that in the longer races. Any similar drag effects on female runners are negligible in comparison.
