I think it should be a dq, as Hassan was in breach of the rules. Muir was clearly impeded and would have overtaken her had Hassan not moved out and impeded her. Athletes have been dq’d for less inmajor championships.
I suspect Muir knows this but the British seem to have signed up to a code of omertà and contracted their athletes to do so too. Witness the lack of debate about Muir missing out on bronze to Senenya in last years world 1500m final. Possibly after all the online hate 800m runner Lynsey Sharp got for speaking out about the same issue a couple of years ago.
We are not allowed any controversy in ‘wines’ athletics, and female athletes are certainly not allowed by their national federations to talk about it.
Hassans moving out so as to impede another runner in the finishing straight is the sort of behaviour that should have been dealt with by her national federation when she was a junior. Thisecjunior races are effectively training races. It’s a running race, not a wrestling match. If I was Hassan, I wouldn’t be very proud of myself, knowing I’d only got the silver by impeding a faster finishing athlete.
Those who say Muir should have overtaken sooner or gone widervmhave clearly never competed indoors. Short straights make it incredibly hard to overtake st all, Muir did well to get into that position in the finishing strait as she also had to overtake an ungainly athlete with flailing arms. The fact she wasn’t fading at the finish but clearly still had the momentum to overtake Hassan until impeded implies that she is now simply the stronger, faster athlete. I can see why Hassan runs indoors, it gives her more opportunities to prevent faster athletes passing, but she has had her time and simply isn’t contending for golds any more.

I didn't tally the comments for/against DQ on this thread, but it seems pretty close. To me - its not a DQ. Fading into outer lanes to hold off a charging competitor is normal operating procedure, and should not garner a DQ unless you cut-off your competitor or swing violent elbows with the obvious intent of harming the competitor.

No she should not be DQ'd and this should NEVER be a DQ! Change the rule to where it only applies if someone forcefully pushes someone to the outside to avoid being passed. But to make yourself "bigger" by opening your arm carriage or veering to the outside lanes should not be a penalty. That's like telling someone to not run on the outside of lane 1 to force others to run wider to pass or saying not to use your elbows to open space in a tight pack. The leading runner should be allowed to control their position. The closing runner should have made a move earlier.

She should not be DQ'd because Muir was further back then you think. Watch the side angle. From the front it looks like impeded, but then you see Muir was 5m back and no chance of passing before the line

Lanes are four feet wide so this is a significant distance to move right. Contact is NOT a requirement; only impeding the progress of the other runner matters. She was not moving right to avoid a lapped runner as this person was at least 10 meters in front of here with only maybe 30 meters to go. She has a free straight line to the finish line so there is no reason to divert her direction.
