Rupp simply dropped out because he was told to drop out. Watch the video. Coming off the turn, you will see him look very quickly to the right and at that point he dropped out. Alberto pulled the plug because they were off world record pace and Ruff did look a little "rough" at that point. There was not foot problem. Saving it for another day.

What does it say about our sport? Answer: it's a niche sport. Some meets matter more than others. The Olympic Games matter. The World Championships matter. I'd put Sochi curling as more notable than a random indoor meet in Boston. Just stating a fact. Rupp is aware of this fact. I don't think any of this reflects his character in any way.

Why do you consider Rupp a bad ambassador of distance running? He's the most interesting thing to happen to USA running in decades. He's gracious in victory and defeat. He trains hard. He signs autographs for the fans. He doesn't get drunk and crash his car into a rock. What more do you want?

Willis is a competitor, Rupp is not.

Willis has class and creds. Rupp represents everything negative about this sport.

I immediately thought of Liquori-Keino when I read Willis' comment. Glad to see that race isn't forgotten. Quitting a competition because it's not going how you'd hoped is just shabby unless you're risking disabling yourself and if you can run an interval session a few minutes later it's unlikely you were hurt.

I wish he finished but lots of better runners have dropped out. I have seen Haile G drop from lots of races. Bekele dropped out of world cross and the world championships 10000. I also saw him drop out of a 1500.Wilson Kiprop dropped out of the Olympic 10000. Lagat dropped out of a 5000 last year.Rupp did not start a 10000 in Eugene but ran another race. He stopped after falling in a diamond league 5000. He lost a shoe and won an NCAA 5000. He also fell and finished the NYC half.
