I've read through this thread, and have tried to understand the critics from an unbiased perspective. The crux of their arguments seems be the records' obscurity - so few people attempt to run 100 miles that it's meaningless. As the race develops, one by one, people fall out back as their willingness and heart deteriorates. They represent all of those who have the raw talent to break this record, but will never attempt it. Talent alone can get you in that pack, but courage, perseverance, and heart keeps you there. Those several hundred people with the talent to set this record won't because they don't have the other qualities it takes to even start such an event. Seen this way, the competition is much larger than the sum of people who've attempted the record.
"But I will get injured." "I don't have half a day to do this." Nobody is fooled by these BS arguments. The real reason this record will stand is because those with the talent don't have the heart. Which is a shame, because I'd really like to see someone break 11:00 in my lifetime. Someone out there has the raw talent, but it takes a lot more than talent to accomplish such a feat.

You sure about that? They have no reason to. Anyone on my D3 team could easily beat the stupid record- except no point in doing it! It would be like punching a baby- basically effortless but you would immediately regret taking advantage of people who are less able than you.
Why try and set a random record that has no competition and no purpose? Maybe I will go and run a 8.85 mile 'race' and pretend I have a national record!

Since this has gone on so far, a couple of questions -
1) Was there a drug test administered? The athlete in question "broke the record" on an indoor track, attempting to control all variables, be it weather, wind resistance, ease of getting to fluids, food, and lots of support. He also uses K-Tape on both knees, so he looks for any performance benefit.
2) If a drug test was not administered, how would this be considered a record? Sure, I am sure the guys can come back on here and say "oh, there is no funding" etc., but rules are rules, and we've had enough 39-45 yr old fail drug tests (Fred Kaiser, Eddy H., etc.) for simple things such as supplements or amphetamines or legit PEDs
3) Rules are rules. This is no different than my STRAV'ing a 100 mile at under 7:12/mi
Congratulations on the performance, we just want to know it's legit, and don't come on this board with, "oh but he's such a great guy, he would never do anything like that". We want proof.
Pretty sure Olsen is tested somewhat frequently, as he competes for the USATF 24-hour and 100K team. I don't think this specific event had testing, but I think he is subject to random tests throughout the year.
I can't speak specifically about Olsen, 24 hour world champion, but I would assume it's the same as Amy Sproston, 100K world champion, who is subjected to the same kind of USADA/IAAF drug testing as anyone else. She writes about it here:

And the difference between STRAV'ing a 100 mile at 7:12/mi is that Olsen set his record on a certified course in a competition. Here's the race's web site:

I'd also point out that at the 24-hour world championship, USATF gave American competitors the same uniform as any runner representing USA in international competition.

You are confused.
Just because you and your 3 D3 teammates can race a 8k X-country race at 6:55/mile does not mean you can average 7:12 for 100mi.

Does it bother anyone that the World Record for the 50K Race Walk is 6:50/mile, and it's pretty conceivable that these guys could keep walking for another 70 miles and average under 7:12/mile?

That's not remotely conceivable. There's nothing to suggest that race walkers fade significantly less than runners as the distance increases. The difference between the race walking 20km world record pace of 6:13/mile and the 50km world record pace is fairly consistent proportionally with the difference between the world record running paces close to those distances. With a very generous extrapolation, maybe a race walker could average 8:15/mile over 100 miles.

You seem to fascinated with mediocrity.
Fact is that these are the types of records that attract older white guys who are looking for a "bucket list" experience beyond the marathon. Few "athletes" in their prime attempt such nonsense.
it's like the marathon "treadmill" world record. Look at the types that attempt it. Not good enough to be national elite runners, but just a notch below.
The reason elite athlete don't mess with such nonsense has nothing to do with training or heart or perserverence. The fact is it's a waste of time and effort.
You didn't see tiger in his prime playing in local golf scramble.
You don't Lebron playing in a national pop-a-shot competition.

There are many variables at play when running 4, 6, 8, or even 12 or 16 hours. I haven't run 100 miles but I can see that the the chance of something going wrong increasing exponentially with distance.
That being said I can see a difference of running an ultra on a road vs a track (and there are all different records for these things). A lot of the ultra world doesn't care about Josh Cox running a fast 50km on a marathon road + 8km track course. But of course the numbers aren't the same for Olympic distance events. How many people go after a fast marathon time on a track?
But every distance event is hard to do and requires a lot of suffering. Making the USATF 100km team is hard because the qualification standards always favor returning runners (ie top 4 from the top 10 each year). In ultra running it's a totally different world than the xc, track and road racing scene events of 26.2 and shorter. I've seen both sides of these worlds and there are probably always going to be some strong opinions/disagreements on performances.

But I know lots of people who'll remember Jon Olsen.. and Sage Canaday. And it's not fleeting. This past weekend a race was held in honor of Ted Corbitt. his prime was in the 1950s.
You guys are so talented, and it'd be so easy for you to break this record. It's puzzling that you'd turn down the admiration of lots of people, plus the financial incentives offered in this thread.
Heck, you don't even have to set the record. Ted Corbitt's race was 24 hours long, and the winner ran 116 miles. You could easily have won that. I'm sure you can push 175 miles in a 24 hour race, if not 200. Then you can spit on the champion's trophy as meaningless. That'd really be a dagger in the side of the ultrarunners you seem to hate so much.
