He got himself boxed in late, until about 75m left. By then Kip was out of range & other runners gained momentum & ground on Centro. But physically, he overcame. And none of this, "Well Centro wasn't trying to beat Kip anyway" or "It wouldn't have happened". This in a year a HS junior finished 10th in the world.

if you actually listened to his interviews centro came into worlds in what he said was his best fitness ever. this was possible because he did not taper or cutback at all during the season excluding the trials which i think he said as an extra or two of rest.
You got it exactly right. Centro also said that he doesn't quite have the years of strength under him to go after a Kiprop level guy and that he trains for these kinds of races, heats, semi's and to contend for the podium.
And that is how you do it. Keep contending for the podium...and well look at how that worked for Simpson 2 years ago.
Centro, sands late winter knee surgery, likely would have made the podium last year.

I think some people don't watch races closely because they should have noticed Chepseba's (a great runner)trying to pick the pace from Kiprop. You know what happened to Chepseba at the end? He became casualty! This race unfolded exactly as expected.

A 1:42 training run with no footage! This completely contradicts what EL G said when asked what he could run 800 in at the end of his career, when he said 1:44.
Lagat run plenty of 800s in his peak years and never broke 1:46, usually way back in the field, so not as if he wasn't given a decent pace.
Scott had an 800pb of 1:45.1 in his best year of 82 when he was a 3:47 miler. That's faster than Centro. I'd be surprised if Matt could break 1:45 at present.

Not sure if this is enough to make you re-evaluate your sense of tactics, but the bronze medalist was "boxed" behind Centro and seemed to do ok. A runner really isn't "boxed" unless they want to make a move and are unable to. Otherwise they're just running the shortest distance which is what happened here. The tactic would have backfired if Kiprop faded as the pack over took him, leaving Centro with no place to go, but the odds of that happening were small.

2:42.6 with 400 to go (54.7)
3:34.19 at the finish (51.59)
54.7 + 51.59 = 1:46.29
Hell, NBC even got his 53.28 from 800-1200, if you doubt that he was constantly ramping up the speed over the entire final 800.
That isn't a good view of the race with 800 to go. This one is much clearer and shows EL G from the side with 800 to go: -

Yes, Centro was boxed late and I thought he blew it. But he had patience and pull it off (by the hair of his teeth). Busting out of the box would not have been a smart move.

unless i am wrong, cram and elg have similar 400m open speed. crammy probably had a 48.0 open 400.
steve cram ran 142 with a 329 best, he and el-g finished races in similar fashion, similar splits. peter elliot ran 142.
and el-g was significantly stronger. - almost 4 seconds faster over the metric mile.
even if elg was slower than cram over 400 the strength factor would at least compensate.
el-g thought running the 8 was not good for him and that is the only reason we did not see tons of 143 results and a couple of 142's.
Thanks for returning to some positive thoughts and civility, even if I might think your humor needs a bit of work. I am legally blind and so rely on audio software to read my computer screen aloud. I'm not sure I would have picked young Centro to medal prior to the race, but as my audio software read across the first line of the results and said "Kiprop... 3:36.." my first reaction, before it moved to the next line, was "Centro's got a medal !" So happy and so excited for him. You look at what he's done in the last two worlds and the Olys and it's extraordinary. I'm so looking forward to where he goes in the next few years.

Centro was boxed until 75m left. He overcame the bad tactic. "Boxed in" is already defined, so don't foster a new definition for this thread only.
In a season when a HS junior finished 10th, no one can say Centro wasn't capable of 1st. I would've liked to see a "free" Centro uninhibited from 400m out. He finished 2011 WC in :51 in a 3:36 race, gaining ground on everyone that last lap, but was back at 1100m.

Never said to bust out of the box. But he did get himself boxed in until late.
In all 3 of his world finals, he's had to overcome tactics. In 2011-2012, he let a group pass him at 1050-1100m in a matter of 1-2 secs, putting him in a hole. This year he got himself boxed until 75m left.
In 2011-2012, he would've placed higher if not for the tactics. In 2013, a year a *HS junior finished 10th & an event that Ngeny beat El G & a fit Morceli finished 7th, Centro could've won. He's closed :51 in a 3:36 race.
