Are tattoos so commonplace that it's now cool to NOT have one?

But I don't want to come off like I'm all anti-tattoo. Obviously I love them or I wouldn't be writing about them. In fact, this is precisely why douchebags stumbling into some non-accredited hellhole and walking out with a permanent piece of shit and hepatitis piss me off so much. Check Russian prison tattoos for what these things are really meant to mean. Those motherf*ckers know what's up. Eskimo had tiny dots in the webbing of their hands to ward off demons etc and the Maori moko which gave rise to those frankly hideous tribal armpieces you see were originally meant to trace a family's lineage and were craved into your goddamn head with an honest-to-God whale bone. back to the original topic of this thread, if people without tattoos are the cool ones, then that makes everybody "cool" by default, which defies the laws of coolness.

***DISCLAIMER: i'm not saying that everyone with tats is cool. that's like saying that every pro football player is cool. some are, most are not.

My white trash sister in law puts this quote up on FB often, "Real women have curves and tattoos." I don't know the Let's Run qualifications for a "Real Woman" but I am pretty sure that is not it....

I think that sums up the mentality of many but not all of the tattoo crowd. Esp the need to post the quote once a month. Need to justify those tats and those 30 extra pounds.

There is a tiny number of people in this world that look good with well done tattoos. For all the rest it is far more cool to not have a tattoo than to have a horrible piece of artwork slowly fading into a black and green blob on their skin.

I hate hippies, but I'll give them this, at least the hippies of the 60's could get a hair cut, shave, and put on decent clothes and turn into yuppies in the 80's. The only reminder they had were some funny pictures from their youth. You can explain away with "oh man look at that hair! Hey.. it was the 60's!" and then go on with a normal life.

You get a sleeve you'll be waiting tables the rest of your life.

As a guy, I'd just say that tattoos always make women less attractive, which I think is a shame, at least with women who start out reasonably attractive.

As for guys, I don't care much one way or the other, but there is a high correlation between tattoos and being a douche, and I do factor it into my 1st impressions of someone. They may not turn out to be a douche, but if initial appearance is all that you have to go by, it's a small but useful piece of data.

People with tats in my experience are batting 1000 in the douche department. Don't see a reason for that to change- ever.

I would never get a tattoo because I know that I would hate it sometimes. I have friends with tattoos and I think they look cool. Whatever. They pull them off; I do not think that I could.

A good test is to grow a solid, thick, full beard. Sometimes it is awesome, other times you feel kind of weird with it (work, country club, etc.). I just know that while I would love my tattoo sometimes, other times I would regret having it, like when I was at the beach with my in-laws and kids.

I think it depends on your definition of "cool." To me it's "cool" not to care much about whether people have tattoos.

Unless those tattoos are on the neck, head, or hands (i.e., those that are visible even in formal clothes). I feel kind of bad for people with tattoos in those locations.
