Trespassing on HS Tracks?

I haven't read this whole thread but if this happened to me I would just go back in the dark of night. I've run alot of sessions on a track at night with no lights, one benefit of this is that it heightens your others senses as you are not relying on your sense of sight.

I was abit nervous about training at night, until an old sage runner saw me and said "Nothing's in the dark, thats not there in the light"

There has been a right wing attack on education for almost 2 decades with no end in sight. Sad stuff. Blaming teachers, poor people and minorities for the problems in the system.

Hey man you should have just carried on your merry way and did your repeats. I would have, especially after warming up and stuff. So what if he calls the cops. Everyone's practice is done. Is there one of those signs that says Walkers in lanes 6-8 and joggers in lanes 1-5 or whatever? Is there a sign that says no public use during high school practice times? What would the old guy say even if he did call 911? "Hey disbatcher lady, I have a young whippersnapper here at the Blank High School track about to start a workout when no one is practicing. Please promptly send an officer and have him hauled off in shackles!" The above posters are right that he is on a power trip with what little authority he has. He'll be telling all his old a$$ friends about that punk at the track and how kids have no respect these days for years haha!

Don't most schools have resource officers? In addition, responses to schools typically come quick. If the OP didn't leave the facility per the instructions of a school official of any sort, he's very likely to get arrested if the cop shows up.

Politics are always fun here, but back to the subject at hand.

For years, I worked out at Oakland Tech High track. My workouts there were regularly faster than other tracks. Only after a loooooooooooooong time, the light bulb comes on over my head. Duh, the track is SHORT! See, I threw the word IDIOT around in my last post, but I guess I'm one too.

Whether or not you're being serious...I did briefly consider hanging around and starting my workout. I almost did, but I probably would have ended up in cuffs. The area cops are usually all too happy to have something to do.

Next time I'll just wear a Guy Fawkes mask and run like hell if the cops show, then detonate the charges I have set along the backstretch.

My high school had a 390m track, and I always wondered if the people using it realized it was short. I like to imagine there's some guy out there who just can't figure out why he works out so fast but can't put it together in a race.

I live in a city of over a million people that only has two tracks (both owned by the city and not adjacent to any schools). One Sunday, I show up to the one that's not too far from my home to do some 800s only to find that it's locked up and there's a sign saying that it's under construction (it was to be resurfaced). However, looking over the track, I could see that no construction had begun and no construction workers were present so I decided I might as well hop the fence and do my workout anyways, since it wasn't going to cause any harm. I should mention that people hop the fence all the time and the grounds-workers I've met in the past couldn't care less.

I was on my first or second repeat when some grounds-workers from another field came whizzing up in a golf cart and started yelling and cursing at me that the track is closed and I have to get out. I'm not about to quit in the middle of a workout so, after briefly explaining my views in a civilized tone, I continued with my workout. They left for a few minutes, then came back, saw that I was still there and tried to cut me off with the golf cart, while the old, crotchety guy kept swearing at me. I kept going and eventually they took off for good and went back to the other fields.

I know that legally I was in the wrong, but, as others have said, I couldn't see the guy calling the cops because someone was running on a public track. I kept a lookout nonetheless and, had I seen any officers nearby, I would have hopped back over the fence and taken off. In this case, whether I'm legally right or wrong doesn't really matter (to me) unless I'm standing in front of a judge in court. That was never going to happen and I don't feel like what I was doing was immoral in any way since it wasn't hurting anybody or anything.

I go to a diocesan high school. We have an A.D. who will be driving around and see us shirtless and will threaten us, but he allows people (one including Erin Donoghue) to use our track at any time, even during school hours, like 10:30-11 in the morning. There's also a couple guys who workout around 4 o clock while we're still having track practice. I'm still on the high school team, and our coach doesn't care cause we're runners, we know track access should be free to all. I just think its funny.

The poster who told you that it is not allowed for "Joe public" to be on the track is correct. I have been a High School/Junior High track coach for 11 years now. No one is allowed to be near the kids who has not been cleared by the school (employees who have passed criminal background checks). The reason you gave that you are safe may be completely true. I ask one question... if it were your children running track, playing football, or whatever wouldn't you want just anyone around them? Last year we called the campus resource officer and chased down a man taking pictures of 7th grade girls playing soccer. The police later found out that he was a 20 year old kid from France doing a photography project. I realize this is not your situation, but the safety of your/our kids is ALWAYS an issue. Students have a right to privacy and safety. Generally most public schools allow track (not always field) use when athletes are not present. The way the school employee handled the situation seenms a tad inappropriate. I have had to ask several people to leave our track, and always do so in a non confronational manner and eplain to them why. They almost always respond with, I never thought of that. Sometimes I get the I pay taxes here, but most listen to reason. Sounds like it was a action/reaction situation. I feel ya.. just find a new track.

I'd like to know if anyone knows if the following is right: track of public high school, locked (but can get in under the fence), Sunday from 7 to 8am, no school activities, nobody around (track is locked...), is it ok to get in and run laps? If I ask for official permission, they most likely say no because they need somebody to open the track. Would this be trespassing? What would you recommend? Thanks.
