I HATE that place! I used to love it and go there every race during my kick just to try and PR, but now I'd rather just lose.
I think you can come out of this looking really good and add a new training partner.
You should praise his ability to run such a fast time off of such a long layoff (do this in front of others with a goal of making him look good). Call him a natural talent, that should really test himself to see how fast he could be with a decent base of training.

Also, how did he run in college (Even Division 3; there are 4 divisions, right?) with a 16 something 5K PR and a bunch of 17 minute 5k' with a 35:29 10K?
He would have been like an 18 minute guy in HS then! Makes me want to have run in college! I didn't know the standards were so slow!I thought everybody was sub 16 5K in HS to run in college.
I have a co-worker who used to be a quasi-serious runner challenge me to a 400m race. He has been out of competition 8 years AFAIK and I think his lifetime PR in the 5k is 16:??. I found a bunch of old 3k results in 9:40-9:50, some 1:19+ half marathons, a bunch of 17:xx 5k and the best one was probably a 35:29 10k. He ran track and XC in high school and college (Division 3). He was not a sprint specialist, so 400m is not his event.
I do marathons and halfs with recent PRs of 2:50/1:19. My most recent open race result is 3.5miles in 20:16 from June. I am probably at least that fast right now.
Should I be worried? I told him it would probably be close even if he was at his best (he doesn't think so). He seems awfully confident. Should I do anything specific to be prepared? I've never done a 400 before or any race on a track. I was planning to do a few time trials between now and the race, but wasn't going to put much effort into training for this. This thing is going down next Friday.

Congrats, dude. Always nice to see fitness and effort trump raw skill. Be gracious and tell him something along the lines of "I was scared you were catching mw on the back straight and ran my fastest 400 in years!" And be flattering regarding him if coworkers ask about it.

Congratulations on the win! The whole point of training is to win races so it's gratifying when it pays off!
You said you didn't talk about it much on the drive back - did you drive into work together afterward? Was that awkward, or highly enjoyable?
Anyway, just wanted to reiterate one last time how cool this is, and how I wish stuff like this was a lot more common. I've run a lot of pickup races against kids, mostly ages 3 - 13, when I've been in my late teens/early 20s (I won all but one of them...), and of course when I was a kid I used to race my friends all the time. But I can think of only five pickup races I've done since I turned 14 against people my age, and only two of those were distances 400m or over. As compared to hundreds of organized meets, with a gun and a clock and all that bs. By contrast, I used to wrestle, and I've probably had about 20 pickup wrestling matches over the last four years, mostly against distinct people. But grownups just aren't interested in pickup distance races! So it's cool that it happened.
And don't forget that you both should be celebrating TOGETHER... that neither of you pulled a hamstring!
In fact, that would probably be my first response to any co-worker inquiries (to help him save face).
Them: "How did it go"? "Who won?"
You: "Actually, we both kind of won... because neither of us pulled a hamstring!" lol.
"I wish I could not train for 8 years and run as fast as ___ did. He obviously has some talent!" "He should train some and see how good he can actually get!".
