Name HS runners who have gone sub9:00 3200m AND sub 1:50

Did Chris Lewis of Mead High School in Spokane, WA run 1:50 or faster?

I think the point of the thread is guys with amazing range and sub 1:50 and sub 9 in HS should be the discussion. Unfortunately, the OP laid out such a confusing mess of criterion, and others have run with it, so now people are answering 4 or more questions.

I'm guessing the list of sub9 guys who later went sub 1:50 in college or pro is pretty long.

I'm betting that its not that long. Go back and look at the long list (the one posted here that goes up to 2003. Most of the names are somewhat familiar).

Verification for claim of Finnerty's 1:49 would be appreciated. According to this info, his PR through outdoors stayed at 1:53.

Wrong Sully dude. I am referring to the jsully posting in this thread. He ran for Thornridge HS in Dolton, Illinois in the mid-late 70's

I remember Ryan Bousque from Esperanza High School (California) ran a 4:09 mile. It was the first mile under 4:10 I had seen done before Alan Webb and Ryan hall and the rest of those after them. Don Sage probably was the only guy before Ryan Bousque. After that people seemed to have followed sub 4:10 miles and it was only a matter of time. It's the flea theory!! First/one flea makes makes it or jumps out of the jar and all the others begin to follow.

Elias Gedyon is one that currently runs that is damn close to achieving it.

Gedyon's PR is 1:52.24 with one HS season to go. Needs a big drop to a 1:49. Being overage (my humble opinion) might help but also might mean he doesn't have that much more upside.

Jeff See split 1:49.xx in High School, though he may not have broken 1:50 in an open race. He also may not have run the 3200m Junior or Senior year, though if he had I'm sure he would have broken 9:00

he ran 8:50 and 4:04 OPEN, certainly had the ability.

What did Gerry Lindgren run for 800m?

He obviously beat the 2mile time easily.

Come on. Bob Kennedy never broke 9:00 either, although in a race with competition I'm sure he would have.

See in high school liked to toy around and use his kick in the end. When would he have run 67's for an 8 lap race?

I did not start running until my sophomore year in High School, and ran 2:07/4:31/9:21 for 880, mile and 2 mile and 15:41 in Cross-country for 3 miles (Illinois).

As any coach would do based upon these performances, he had me focus on the the longer distances as a junior and I ran 14:16 for 3 miles at the State CC meet and 9:00.5 for 2 miles at State Track.

The issue here is that Tom Graves from Sandburg HS, ran 14:08 in CC; and 4:08 and 8:52, yards, and was the same year in school as me.

State cross-country senior year - Tom ran 13:56 and I was again 2nd for the second time in 14:00. I later ran 14:44 for 5k on a hilly Bloomington, Indiana course at the AAU CC Championships post State.

My coach in January started to train me for the shorter distances, as I had exhibited the ability to change gears in races. Within 2-3 steps, I was able to inject a almost all out sprint for 15-30 steps, and then go back to pace.

Senior year - 49.7 440 yards, 1:50.26 880 yards (State, only State title), 4:06.2 mile and 9:11 for 2 miles at the Quad State meet (Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio).

One could also look at if Webb, Sullivan and Branen ran their sub 1:50/9:00 in the same year? Not me.

Yes, I could argue that I only ran the 2 mile twice my senior year - the first meet of the season and 2nd to last meet of the year, and won both. After the 9:11 race, I came back that day and ran 2nd leg on the 4x880 Illinois team, with none other than John Sullivan (Thornridge) as the anchor leg. He warmed up in a cut off jeans jacket! I ran 1:54 and think he ran 1:54 a change for the victory.

Being able to change gears is crucial in creating the opportunities for post college racing. Look at Wheating and Lagat - the ability to inject a pace change will crush your opponent's mind. As my coach of 11 years Mike During would say to me: "There are no friends on the track!"

How to develop this talent? Do it in practice. Then have faith and courage to do it in a race.

Jim Spivey, thanks for setting the record straight!

From my 25 years observing high school running, the overwhelming majority of boys that break 1:50 in the 800 can also break 50.0 in the open 400. If you can do that in all likelyhood you are also competing on your high school teams 4 by 4, which doesn't give you much opportunities to fully develop your 3200. If you are on a small school you may even by on the 4 by 200!

Jim you were obviously a rare talent that was also well coached your entire career. I heard you were super low mileage but still broke 13:20 early on, went back to a stellar career in the 1500, and came back to the 5000 very late and still pr.d again.

Man Illinois has had some super high school runners over the years. Maybe second only to California.

Michael Stember ran 9:02 as a junior and didn't run the 3200 his senior year. So that's pretty close, but no cigar.

i know it's not the same, but i thought it was interesting... the genetics are there, so maybe it's possible.

The majority of guys who ran sub 1:50 in high school probably could have broken 9:00

If we're trying to list guys with great range, we should make the 3200 time at least 8:55. 9 minutes is not impressive for a 1:49 runner. This is like saying to list the guys who have gone 4:00 and sub 14:20.
