I run in areas with bear, coyote, and snakes all the time, and have never considered carrying any sort of weapon nor would I ever, ever need one.

You know what the most dangerous animal is? A dog. Dogs aren't afraid of humans the way wild animals are, so they're more willing to attack.

I agree. I've often said that the only two species that really scare me are dogs and humans (although I admit to being pretty freaked out when I ran into a bear on the trail last year). I often run by coyotes, and my only real concern with them is that dog-owning jerks who don't obey leash laws precipitate encounters that result in dead coyotes (and sometimes dead dogs).
