could bolt hold the 100, 200, 400 and 800 world records at the same time within the next 3 years?

I think anyone who could run in the 44 range for the 400m could break 1:50 for the 800m. They would have already had to do some speed endurance work to get to 44 so the 1:50 would happen.

Doing a simple ratio analysis:

44sec(400m)/1:45(800m) = 54sec(400m)/?(800m)---> ? = 2:08.8

so a 44sec/400m and a 1:45/800m would be somewhat equivalent to: 60sec 400m & 2:23 800m

54sec 400m & 2:09 800m

52sec 400m & 2:04 800m

50sec 400m & 1:59 800m

Those combinations of times seem doable to me for someone who trains for both. This shows that a 1:50 800m for a 44 400m person should be EASY! I know that performance, as you get faster, isn't a linear thing and this analysis will be off some but I bet it is somewhat conservative since I think the faster the 400m time the more your going to have to train a little like an 800m person. There are guys who play basketball and don't run track at all that could bust out a 54sec 400 but would have a very hard time doing a 2:09 800m. The faster the 400m time and the training that comes with it, the more likely they could hit one of the times given above including the 44sec 400m and 1:50 800m combination.

If you do the same analysis for a 44sec 400m and a 1:50 800m, somewhat equivalent times would be:

60sec 400m & 2:30 800m

54sec 400m & 2:15 800m

52sec 400m & 2:10 800m

50sec 400m & 2:05 800m

49sec 400m & 2:02.5 800m

48sec 400m & 2:00 800m

47sec 400m & 1:57.5 800m

46sec 400m & 1:55 800m

45sec 400m & 1:52.5 800m

44sec 400m & 1:50 800m

I can surely believe the slower time combinations are obtainable so why wouldn't this extrapolate down to the faster times (given the reasoning that the faster the 400 time the more 800m type of training the person would have to do)? And don't just call names or curse, give some kind of thought-out response please!

NOPE. Closest was Tommie Smith, 10.1 and 44.5.

Sprinting is not distance running. Just because you can have a world class WR holder in the 1500 do something similar in the 5k doesn't mean the same holds true for the conversion from 100 to 400m.

Alan, do you know anything about Bolt? Or did you just see him win the Olympic 100 and decide he is pure fast twitch? Back in HS he was a 200/400 guy, he ran 45.30 (electronic) as a 17 year old! He just hasn't wanted to train for the 400 recently but this relay is a sign that maybe he is getting serious about it again and if so watch out. That kind of talent doesn't go away. His 200 PR when he ran that 400 was 20.25.

As for the 800, you say sprinters are sprinters for a reason and none could break 1:50. I agree for guys like Powell and Gay this is true. But guys like Johnson, Wariner and potentially Bolt who have been doing 400 work and decide to get a little more distance training in, 1:50 would be totally doable. They are some of the best athletes in the world. 1:49.9 isn't a great time at all, sorry to break it to you. For elite athletes like them I have no doubt if they focused and trained they could achieve it.

bolt had much better wt/power ratio aged 17y for 400 ( he was much lighter )

muscle addition to a young frame doesn't always imply you get faster over 400m, a distance which causes severe hurt if carrying extra bulk

he's clearly a 100/200 guy now & if he wants <<45, he may actually need to lose muscle bulk to do it

by physics, the curve has to cost you at least 0.20s, making it a <9.92s

now, it's physiologically impossible to run 200m flat-out from gun-to-tape like a 100m ( you will crumble by about 150m max ), so he had to keep at least 0.15s in reserve in order to keep alive in last 50m

he was likely a high-9.7 guy that day & wouda actually won the 100 with a wr , beating donovan !!!

if he'd run the 100, he wouda held the 100/200 wr ( 19.66wr from trials ) & held the 400wr with it in '99 ( mo ran 9.79 in '99 before mj ran 400wr, but mj wouda still held it if he'd run the 100 in atlanta - that race had +0.7 wind whereas mo had 0 wind in his 9.79 )

if you doubt this, look at the 100pbs of <19.6 guys

the slowest 100pb of a 19.6 - 19.7 guy is x-man with 10.00 & he ran that in american trials in the heats but foundered in the final where he wouda expected to run faster than in the prelims

mj didn't run just <19.6, he ran 19.32

the usual conversion for an equally proficient 100/200 guy is 2.0 ( but obviously mj was known for 200 not 100 )

on that basis, the baseline 100 time for 19.32 is

9.66

giving some largesse for him possibly being better at 200 than 100, 0.1s slower than that is a reasonable error factor

He has already run a 43 high relay at the start of this season. If he consentrated on the 400, he should be able to run at least 44's and probably could run 43's in the open 400m. Thats more likely than a wr 1500 guy doing something similar in the 5k.

Bolt's relay split converts to a 43 high for the open 400. If you look at Wariner and most other sprinters, the relay is only .2-.5 faster than their open time. Furthermore, how do you expect any matter of 5 meters to slow USAIN BOLT for an entire second?

I think it's a given he could run in the 44's and most likely could run in the 43's and possibly even set a wr in the 400m. He's not too bulky to do that.

I doubt very seriously that he could ever break the 800m wr if he trained excusively for it because he is too bulky for that. May have a slim chance if was less bulky but probably doesn't have the physiology or the aptitude for it.

He isn't too bulky to break 1:50 for the 800m if he was training for it and could probably do it while just training for the 400m.

A 400m in 44.0 400m is worth about a 1:42:69 800m for an equivalent effort (http://myweb.lmu.edu/jmureika/track/Mercier/window7.html)

Since he has more of a 400m body than an 800m body it would be hard for him to do the 1:42:69 if not impossible even if he is training exclusively for the 800m (if body type remains the same). But, if he were training for the 800m, he could easily run a 1:50 800m based on the quality of his 400m. and would most likely be able to do it with just 400m training.

I'm sure he will never try to train exclusively for the 800m and I don't think he should try. I do hope he goes for the 400m record (long jump too) and maybe in his buildup for the 400m record attemp we could get to see him try an 800. I'm sure that would prove my argument.

By the way Paul McMullin ran a 3:54+ mile while being about 6'3" and weighing about 195lbs (http://www.iaaf.org/athletes/biographies/letter=m/country=usa/athcode=20030/index.html).

mennea ran 19.72 (granted at altitude and without a rail) and didn't break 10.

Well than he didn't really actively pursue that goal-he didn't run the 100 much.

I will start this by saying that I am really not a fan of runningart he irritates more than anyone else on this board and I disagree with him almost as much as Flagpole. On that note I agree with him on this one. Just because Bolt ran that in high school does not mean that he can just do it now. He is a 100/200 runner. Now if he decides he wants to completely change his training in 3 years he might be able to break the 400 record. He will never ever ever come close to the 800 wr. The only way he would have had a chance is is 6 years ago he decided he wanted to run that event. People do not understand the physiological differences between events like 100/200 and 800. They are huge. The reason that someone can run a decent 400 who is a really good sprinter is because you are able to still use the creatine phosphate energy system. The 800 is completely different.
