As far as the players, they're mercenaries and are probably secretly amused that fans take team identity so seriously. The players are just doing their job and trying to win, and will do so for whoever signs the checks.

I love how people just bring up this argument when talking about pro-sports. We don't follow the players because they come from Boston or New York or LA or anything. We follow the players because they play for those teams in that area. When a player from that area plays for those teams, that's extra special for us fans, but we really don't care where the players come from, only where they play now (and maybe where they go when they get traded).

It seems to me that the average Yankees fan tends to stay quieter or at least classier than the average fan of those they face. The Yankees haters are the worst, the ones who root for "anyone but the Yankees." Take this thread for example. Phillies fans have done most of the hating. There are some bad apples, but Yankees fans seem to be more of a stay-quiet-when-they're-winning team, especially this year.
If the Yankees win the series, it will be another reason for people to hate them. The haters are inconsolable.
That said, I think the teams are well-matched and I'd love to see it go to the Yanks on game 7.

He was referring to last year's all star game fyi. And yes Lidge blew a save this year at Yankee Stadium, helping the Yankees avoid a sweep at the hands of the Phils.
Sure, the 2008 ASG. As for 2009, Lidge actually blew two saves in the series in May, one of which the Phils came back to win in extras. Yanks had a number of chances to win that game, so easily could have taken two of three themselves.

people in this area talk about this team like they supported them there whole life when in reality they just started to pay attention in the last 2 weeks of last year.
the seagulls were the #1 team as far as fans are concerened for the past 25 years. around here its more people who like to get drunk, over-eat, tailgate and watch a winner then people who are loyal and support a team because they like the team and the sport. its always talked about how good the fans are here, and they are really crazy when at the games but if the team is not doing well nobody cares. nobody cares about a sixers team led by lou williams and the majority of the people dont even know who he is, but if they got lebron james in a trade tommorrow and went to the finals this year lou williams would be everybodys favorite player. when the sixers went to the finals in 2001 they were everybodys favorite team, but that only lasted a couple months and 3 years later the stadium was empty. in 93 when the phils went to the series everybody loved them and 3 years later the same people couldnt name more than 2 people on the team or knew nothing about the team of 92 even.

Phillies drew 3,600,693 for 3rd most in MLB attentance in 2009. Historically, the Phillies are a top 5 draw in attendance. Clearly, the vast majority of Phillie fans are NOT bandwagon jumpers.
those facts are interesting. i am going more off an opionion. the attendance avg. numbers are high only after the new stadium. what really jumps out at me is the fact that i just know so many people that go to the games as a night out or to hang at the park because its new and cool and you can go on dollar dog night and stand in ashburn alley all night drinking and not even watching the game. they dont even know whats going on and if its a day game or sunday they arent even going into the game till the 3rd inning or later because they were throwing washers into a can (nothing wrong with that but they are not serious fans in my opinion). there are alot of really hardcore fans around here, people who have von hayes and terry mulholand jerseys in there closets. i just know way more people who do the eagles chants during a phils game and who were not only not posting on facebook every single night about how they are "so excited for the game tonight", but didnt even know who the phillies were playing on any given night or anything about them or what am radio station they are played on untill last year. maybe i hang out with the wrong people. with that said these new fans are great for the team and have been great for the atmosphere during the game in the ballpark over the past 2 seasons so whatever.

i agree. i love philly teams, all of them. i still watch the sixers (if someone can explain to me how setting up a team to run then attaching an $80million anchor to it makes sense, please let me know). i wear out the last button on my remote if there's two teams playing unless one is a playoff team. I do think, overall, the fans' loyalty goes Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers. but there's true fans of all of them. i went to a phillies game out in pittsburg earlier this year and had two college girls wearing pink phillies stuff behind me. they repeated asked about who the players were and where we found this starter (it was J.A. Happ. in august).
You are also 100% right on just wanting to drink. i've thought for years that alchohol shouldn't be allowed at games. if you can't enjoy the game without drinking, you're not a fan. and its those people that make the rest of us look bad. I love the show It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but what they showed about fans not caring about the game and just wanting to drink and riot was disgraceful.
When the phillies won last year, i drove home to watch it with my parents. After the game, i hugged my mother, who had recently gotten over cancer and had doubts about if she would see a title again. that's what being a fan is
Everything i've said applies to yankees fans and new york fans in general. its the alchoholic assholes who dont watch that ruin it for everyone. this is going to be a fun series, i hope the "fans" don't destroy it for the rest of us.

I grew up watching Phillies in the 70's when By Saam did play by play and my dad taking me to the Vet to see: Larry Bowa, Dave Cash, Mike Schmidt, Greg "the bull" Luzinsky, Bob Boone, Willie Montanez, Dick Allen, Garry Maddox, Jay Johnstone, "Lefty" Steve Carlton, Jim Lonborg, and Charlie "Frank" selling hotdogs in the stands. This was long before Von Hayes.
I remember Garry Maddox defensive skills in center field were referred to as "2/3 of the earth is covered by water, but Maddox covers the remaining 1/3." I was just out of high school when we won the World Series in 1980 and went to the Broadstreet parade. I remember when Tug Mcgraw yelled, "New York can take this championship and stick it". Oh yes, these were the days. Anyway, enough about memory lane.

this refers to 3/4 of the people i know. and like i said before theres nothing wrong with that and at least they are filling the stands and screaming there heads off in the last few weeks of the season through the playoffs, but in my opinion as far as the phillies are concerned there arent a whole lot of real fans. maybe it will change with a couple more years making it to the playoffs.
I was 10 in 1980. My grandparents lived in Philadelphia so I only got to go to a couple of games a year during the summer when we went up to visit. I cherish sitting along the third base line and watching Schmidt pinch hit a game winning home run in extra innings. I remember Lonnie Smith coming in as a base runner and defensvie replacement for Luzinski as a rookie in 1980 (pretty funny given his later history). I never understood why they traded Manny Trillo.

That has to do with the fact that the yankees are the team people say they like when they don't actually know anything about baseball. They are the biggest baseball icon due to a long history or success so everybody knows who the yankees are without even following baseball. It's easy to say "Yankees" when someone asks you who your favorite baseball team is, because that's the only team you've ever heard of. So a lot of the yankee "fans" don't really know much about the team or the sport to comment.
And stop complaining about people "ruining" the game by showing up and not knowing anything about the team or just getting drunk. In case you haven't noticed, sporting events these days are used a lot just for social reasons, and for the ability to say "yeah, I was at that game." It's something you aren't going to be able to change, so just be happy that they're wearing a Phillies/Yankees hat to begin with and enjoy the game.

I would say these days, it's trendier to say you're a Red Sox (although that's fading) or Cubs fan.

i dont think these people are ruining anything, they are actually helping because at the games they really get into it going crazy booing and chanting. last years playoffs were hilarious when brett meyers worked a walk off of sabathia and made him throw a ton of pitches that he fouled off and the crowd played into that heavilly.
i am just saying that i dont think the majority of the phillies fans from the past 2 years specifically are that great of fans. i just know too many of them that all they know is the past 2 years but they claim that they are the biggest fans and know everything and have been watching them since they were a little kid. i was talking to a guy i run with about 2 months ago and he was saying how big of a fan he was and how he has watched like every game since he was a kid in the early 80's. the night before the phils were playing the blue jays and nick leyva is the 3rd base coach. i said how does nick leyva still have a job. the guy had no clue who nick leyva was. i confronted him and he said those were the couple years when he didnt watch them. then he totally blew his cover when i asked him who was a better play by play guy scott grahm or scott franzke. he never heard of scott grahm. this describes most of the people i know who claim they are the biggest fans. they do know there eagles though.
Man, they need to get some ESL classes going in Philadelphia.
